Florida Flame News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga., January 17 â Smush Parker scored 24 points and dished out 10 assists as the Florida Flame snapped a five-game losing streak with a 108-104 victory over Roanoke Monday in the final game of the NBDL Martin Luther King, Jr. Showcase at the Columbus Civic Center.
The Flame improved to 4-15 and snapped a five-game Roanoke winning streak with the victory. The Dazzle dropped to 12-7.
Asheville defeated Fayetteville, 84-74, in the first game of the final day of the Showcase. The Huntsville Flight slipped by hosting Columbus, 77-76, in the second game of the day.
In a game that had been tied 15 times and had seen the lead change hands 11 times, Terrence Shannon made a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to play to give Roanoke a 104-103 lead, but Tremaine Fowlkes gave Florida the lead for good on the ensuing trip down the floor, battling for a tough lay-in with 56.9 to play.
"The last five minutes we really fought back, got some steals and hit the back end of free throw trips," Florida head coach Dennis Johnson said. "With all the focus that was placed on these two games, it was really important for us to pick up the win in this one."
Hiram Fuller, Byron Mouton and Kirk Haston all made free throws in the final 24 seconds to ice the game away for Florida. Haston finished with 21 points and Fowlkes chipped in 17 for Florida. Fuller added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Corey Alexander scored a game-high 25 points and dished out 10 assists to lead Roanoke, but the Dazzle point guard missed a jumper with 15 seconds to play that could have tied the game at 106. Mouton then hit the back end of two free throw attempts to give Florida a three-point advantage.
"We didn't execute down the stretch. The difference between yesterday and today is that we were knocking down open looks yesterday and they weren't falling today," Roanoke head coach Kent Davison said. "You can't complain when you have a good look at a 15-footer with three seconds left. It just didn't go down."
Shannon had 23 points, while Isiah Victor recorded a double-double for the Dazzle with 15 points and 11 boards. Matt Carroll scored 11 points to round out double-figure Dazzle scorers.
The Flame continues an 11-day road swing at Columbus on Thursday. The Dazzle is host to the Flight on Saturday.
