
Flame Acquires Former FGCU Forward Roman Brown

FORT MYERS, Fla., March 16 - According to an announcement by Head Coach Jeff Malone, the Florida Flame has acquired forward Roman Brown from the NBA Development League available player pool and released forward Theron Smith following an injury.
Brown, a 6-8, 215-pound forward out of Florida Gulf Coast University ('04) participated in training camp with the Flame after competing in the Flame's 2005 open player tryout. Brown played two seasons with the Eagles, averaging 8.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Brown started 44 of 56 games at FGCU after transferring from Arkansas-Little Rock and remains among the school's top-10 leading scorers and rebounders. The 25-year-old shot 52 percent from the field during his college career and holds FGCU's all-time mark for career blocked shots with 55 overall.
Brown is expected to be in uniform for the Flame in their next game at Albuquerque on Friday, March 17. He will wear jersey #9.
Smith appeared in 33 games with 30 starts for the Flame. The 6-8, forward averaged 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the floor and 82.5 percent from the free throw line.
Florida (21-17) returns to action this Friday night, as the Flame begins a two-game road swing against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (19-19) at Tingley Coliseum. Following Friday night's contest, Florida and Albuquerque will round out their back-to-back set on Saturday, March 18 at Tingley. Both games tip-off at 9 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. MT and can be heard live on Kingdom FM 91.5. The Flame is currently in second place in the NBA Development League standings, 3.5 games behind the first-place Fort Worth Flyers (25-14).
The Florida Flame is the official D-League affiliate of the NBA's Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Showcasing the best young talent in professional basketball outside of the NBA, the Flame play a 48-game schedule during the 2005-06 season with 23 home games at Germain Arena. Led by a group of local investors, the Flame is now in its second season of providing affordable, family entertainment to sports fans throughout Southwest Florida.
The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.). The Bakersfield Jam (Calif.) will compete in the league beginning with the 2006-07 season.
The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Forty-two (42) players have been called up to the NBA on 60 separate occasions. Eleven (11) former D-League coaches, six athletic trainers, 14 referees and 30 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.
