Port Huron Flags News Release
(MUSKEGON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags traveled to LC Walker Arena on Saturday night and left the home team speechless as they held the lead for the duration of the contest and recorded a solid 3-1 win over the league's first place Muskegon Fury.
Two early fights broke out to start the night on an exciting note. Port Huron's Ben Gustavson and Bill Zalba dropped the gloves after just 40 seconds had run off the clock. Less than two minutes later, Rob Snowball exchanged blows with Kelly Thomson. After tempers had been calmed, veteran defenseman Shayne Tomlinson commenced the scoring for the Flags at 2:47, assisted by Greg Bullock and Gustavson. Steve Hildenbrand added another at the ten minute mark, from Kris Vernarsky and Jeremy Tucker. His power play tally put the Flags up by two, as the Flags recorded six shots on goal, compared to the Fury's nine in the opening frame..
Netminder Noah Ruden denied all eight of Muskegon's attempts in the second period to keep the score the same, while the offensive unit managed an equal number on Ryan Cyr.
Todd Robinson was credited with a marker in the third, ending the shutout for the visitors and giving the home squad a breath of life. However, Chris Bogas locked up the game when he potted an empty-netter in the final minute of play.
Ruden's 32 saves on 33 shots gave him his sixth win of the season and improved the Flags' record to 21-28-6, as well as the team series to 3-4-1. With Elmira's loss to Rockford, Port Huron moved ahead of the Jackals in the standings and picked up some steam for the post-season push.
After heading to Fort Wayne on Friday and Rockford on Saturday, the Flags return to McMorran on Sunday, March 4 to host the Elmira Jackals at 5 p.m.
