Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags struck first, but the visiting Muskegon Fury came up with the magic number in the shoot-out to skate away with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.
The first period passed uneventfully and completely even, with both squads receiving just one penalty, shooting 8 times and recording no goals.
Past the halfway marker of the second, the Flags lit their goal lamp when Kris Vernarsky deflected Craig Mahon's pass, which originally came from B.J. Adams. At 14:09, Port Huron took the first lead of the night, as they put away 12 shots on goal in the frame, while Muskegon got off just 7 attempts.
Joe Pomaranski leveled the tables when he snuck in the puck behind Noah Ruden at 11:47 in the third. Assisted by Mike Watt and Ryan Barnes, it was the only other tally in regulation, despite 12 shots in the frame by the Fury and 14 from Port Huron.
Ruden and Clayton Pool each stopped three of the initial five shooters, sending the contest to additional frames. Ryan Meini found the net to clinch the game for the Fury. Ruden stopped 27 of 28 shots in the shoot-out loss, while Pool made 34 of 35 saves for the win. Picking up a point for their overtime appearance, the Flags widened their lead on Elmira to 6 points and shortened the gap between Port Huron and Flint to four.
Meini, Ruden and Jeremy Tucker were named AT&T's First, Second and Third Stars of the Game, respectively. On Friday night, the Flags suit up against the Chicago Hounds for the teams' third meeting of the season and second at McMorran.
Chew Up the Hounds! The first 100 fans through the doors on Friday night will receive vouchers for a free hot dog as the Flags look to "chew up the Hounds" when Chicago comes to town. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7:30 p.m.
