Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags fell to the visiting Kalamazoo Wings, 4-1, in front of 2,141 fans on Saturday night, after the Wings dropped three goals in the final five minutes of the game.
Kalamazoo opened up the scoring at 8:13 in the first frame when Kory Karlander rebounded a shot from Jeff Brown during a power play. Nick Bootland was credited with the second assist. A collision at the net at 13:58 put net-minder Noah Ruden in the locker room, sending emergency back-up goalie Paul Soli in between the red pipes for the Flags. The Wings shot six times against Ruden and seven at Soli, while Port Huron recorded 10 attempts on Tom Askey.
Neither side was able to find the net in the second period, despite both multiple opportunities for both teams. A strong defensive stance from the Flags, coupled with a strong effort from Soli, denied all 8 of Kalamazoo's shots, while the visitors returned the favor on an equal number from Port Huron.
An uneventful third period turned interesting after the half-way mark, when Greg Bullock one-timed a pass from Garett Cameron to knot the score at 11:55. After several minutes of a tied match, Tyler Willis sent the K-Wings ahead at 15:30, on an assist from Bootland. Lucas Drake followed suit at 17:45, and then again at 18:41 to give the Wings the victory. Port Huron outshot Kalamazoo, 11 to 9 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Soli, Willis and Drake were named AT&T's first, second and third stars of the game, respectively. The next home stand for the Flags comes on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they face the Quad City Mallards at 7:30 p.m. Call (810) 982-FLAG for tickets.
