Port Huron Flags News Release

(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Flags battled back from a 3-1 deficit to score five unanswered goals and secure their second home win of the season in front of the largest crowd at McMorran, since opening night.

Just 1:23 into the first period, Trevor Edwards scored his third goal of the season on Rockford Goaltender Frederic Cloutier, assisted by Mike Olynyk and Josh Elzinga. A slashing penalty on Ryan Markham gave Kevin Ulanski a power play goal at 6:36, on assists from Nicolas Corbeil and Kaleb Betts. Shortly after, recently acquired Chris Bogas was sent to the penalty box for interference which resulted in the second power play goal for the IceHogs. At 8:38, Betts beat Dustin Traylen at the net, with assists going to Corbeil and Ulanski. Rockford posted 13 shots on goal in the first period, while Port Huron recorded 10.

Betts netted his second goal at 3:45 in the second, off assists from Ulanski and Corbeil. It would be the final highlight of the night for Rockford. The Flags took over the game, knowing the stakes that were on the line in front of the home fans.

Robert Snowball and Eric Lizon dropped their gloves immediately after Betts' goal and exchanged blows in front of a boisterous Port Huron crowd. Assistant Steve Hildenbrand took advantage of a power play to score at 8:43, assisted by Pat Sutton and Brad Bonello. About five minutes later, Bonello tied up the game with assists credited to Elzinga and Ryan Markham. Traylen allowed nothing else inside the net, as Rockford shot on goal eight times, while Port Huron took six.

Jesse Bennefield's holding penalty carried over to the start of the third, and the Flags capitalized. Captain Greg Bullock scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Mark Cadotte. On a breakaway at 4:01, Markham sent the puck past Cloutier, off assists from Hildenbrand and Sutton. Even a pair of 5-on-3 advantages for the IceHogs could not bring down the Flags. Olynyk put the icing on the cake at 19:43, when he took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to score his first goal of the season, assisted by Edwards and Bonello. Rockford recorded 11 shots on goal in the third, while Port Huron took nine.

AT&T's First, Second and Third Stars of the Game were awarded to Bonello, Bullock, and Betts, respectively. Port Huron travels to Quad City tomorrow, and then returns to McMorran on Sunday to face the Muskegon Fury at 5 p.m.
