Odessa, TX: In a pair of firsts today, the Roughnecks announce that the first-ever set of twin brothers have signed to play for the team. Additionally, Odessa is please to announce that the first player on the 2006 roster has been called up to the Arena Football League.

Art Berlanga one of the best defensive backs ever to wear a Mesa State College uniform signed a contract with the Odessa Roughnecks and within 48 hours was called up to the Colorado Crush of the AFL. Berlanga's ability to play a physical style of man coverage not only impressed Mike Esposito and Francisco Lujan from the Roughnecks coaching staff, but also Colorado head coach Mike Daily. Berlanga reported to Denver on Monday morning and is practicing with the Crush all week. Berlanga a 5'10" 175 Corner who has been clocked consistently in the 4.3 rage in his 40 Yard Dash, was named RMAC Defensive Back of the Year in 2005. Art finished with eight interceptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns, as well as leading the RMAC in tackles and pass break ups for a second year in a row.

Art's identical twin brother Frankie Berlanga has also signed a one year contract with the Roughnecks. Frankie played along his brother Art at Mesa State in the defensive backfield as well. Frankie also received All-conference honors his senior season with the Mavericks, finishing with five Interceptions, 30 Tackles and 9 Pass Break-ups.

"Nothing comes between brothers and that is the kind of chemistry we are going to have on our roster," said coach Esposito of the twins, "We wish Art the very best at the next level but will gladly welcome him back later in the season if we have such an opportunity."
