WEST DEBATE: With a 3-1 win over Indiana Friday night in Nebraska, the Lincoln Stars halted the Ice's unbeaten streak at 11 games (10-0-1) and became the first team in the West Division to earn a victory against the USHL's top team. Indiana struck back quickly the next night as the club downed the Omaha Lancers 3-2 in a shootout and improved their record against the "West" to 8-1-0.
THE BENNETT REPORT: Goaltender Brett Bennett took his "goaltending show" to Nebraska this weekend and was strong once again in two games between the pipes against Lincoln and Omaha. He stopped an Ice season-high 37 shots in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Stars and came back with a 31-save showing in the 3-2 shootout victory over the Lancers. He continues to lead all USHL netminders in wins (8), goals-against-average (1.88) and save percentage (.938).
PK STORY: The Indiana Ice penalty killing units continue to rank among the league's elite as the Ice has killed off 19 of their opponents' last 20 power play attempts and are currently first on the road on the "PK" with a 93.8% clip (30/32) and second overall with an 89.3% mark (75/84).
TEAM GOSSIP: Brandon Richardson's Ice season-best point streak was snapped at nine games in Lincoln, but he still has 14 points (3G, 11A) in his last nine contests....Will MacDonald scored the team's second shorthanded goal of the year in Friday's game at Lincoln...Mikael Owilli and Garrett Kennedy are tied for second in the USHL with (+10) plus/minuses....Torey Krug notched two points on Saturday and leads all league d-men with 12 points...The Ice is second in both goals for/game (3.86) and goals against/game (2.14)...Indy is riding a seven-game home winning streak....Ben Albertson has two goals in his last three contests...Zach Golembiewski has six points (2G, 4A) in his last five games.
CAPS AND CARLSON: The Washington Capitals signed former Ice defenseman and 2008 first round NHL Draft Pick John Carlson to a three-year entry level contract on Friday. Carlson was the Ice's top defensemen last season as he compiled 43 points (12G, 31A) in 59 games of work.
GOALTENDING U: Former Ice goaltenders racked up seven wins in net over the weekend led my multiple win efforts from Scott Darling (Maine) and Matt Hoyle (Harvard). Also earning victories were Alex Kangas (Minnesota), Cody Reichard (Miami-OH) and Alec Richards (Yale). In addition, all five of the above netminders have GAA's under 2.00 led by Darling's miniscule 1.00 GAA.
