Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats announced today that, Linebacker Derron Thomas and Lineman Arthur Smith have been placed on their recallable re-assignment list. The duo is among the first cuts made by the team. Placing a player on recallable re-assignment allows the Firecats 48 hours to reclaim them before another team would be able to claim them. The team recently released Quarterback Omar Haugabook and Receiver Keith Brown as well.
"It usually takes about a week for guys to get used to the pace of the arena game", said Firecats Coach Kevin Bouis. "Some guys were picking it up faster than others and so we decided to keep the ones around who were showing good signs of progression."
The cuts came after the team's first scrimmage on Saturday March 7th. The training camp roster currently sits at 30 players. Florida will have to cut at least eight more to get down to their regular season roster of 22 by Monday March 16th.
Florida suspended fullback Colt Colletti after their three day mini-camp which began on March 1st. The Firecats also placed Lineman Larry Brown on the refused to report list after the mini-camp.
"The defense finally starting showing some intensity tonight at practice, it's the first time we've had that so far," Bouis added. "By Thursday we should start to look pretty crisp on both sides of the ball." The Firecats will hold their second scrimmage Thursday March 12th at Estero High School beginning at 6pm. The scrimmage is open to the public.
Florida opens the 2009 season at Germain Arena against division rival South Georgia on March 21st.
2009 season tickets are on sale now with eight-game season-ticket packages starting as low as $108. Call 239-390-CATS (2287) to reserve your seats or visit the team online at www.FloridaFirecats.com.
