Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- Over the years the Florida Firecats have had some of the af2's best tacklers and it looks like the tradition will continue with the addition of Maurice Lane. Lane finished his collegiate career as the Baylor Bears #2 All-Time solo tackles leader (248), trailing only College and Pro Hall of Famer Mike Singletary (351). Lane was offered a spot on the roster following his impressive showing at the Firecats most recent open tryout.

"We've had the luxury in the past of having some of the best tacklers in the game," said Firecats Head Coach Kevin Bouis. "I'm excited to get Lane into camp and see what he can do. The bar's been set pretty high around here. He's got his work cut out for him, but he's definitely got the resume."

The Firecats already have the leagues' All-Time leading tackler Quincy Sorrell (389.8) on the roster for 2007. Sorrell finished 2nd in the af2 in tackles last year behind teammate Cory Bailey who led the "deuce" with 117.5 stops. Before the start of the 2006 season former Firecat Roy Stabler was the af2's All-Time top tackler with 334.5.

A 2005 Thorpe Award and All-American honors candidate, Maurice was a four-year starter at Baylor leading the team in tackles every season since his sophomore campaign recording a total of 365 stops while starting in 44 consecutive games. The Miami native twice led the Big 12 in tackles for a season and surged as high as #3 in the nation with 7.7 solo tackles per game in 2004.

The Firecats will host their next open tryout Saturday March 3rd at Estero High School. Players will be asked to participate in a Pro-Style combine. Workout attire and cleats are recommended. The Tryout will be held outdoors and will begin at 11am. Registration begins at 10am. Players are encouraged to pre-register by calling the Firecats office at (239)-390 CATS (2287) or by visiting the team online at www.FloridaFirecats.com.

Florida will open the 2007 season at home against the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgs, Saturday March 31st. 2007 Season tickets are available now! Call (239) 390-CATS (2287) today to reserve your seats!
