
Firebirds Sign Purdue's All-Time Leading Receiver

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League have signed former Purdue standout, wide receiver/defensive back Brian Alford to a two-year contract. The team also signed quarterback Jose Davis to a free agent contract. Terms for both deals were not disclosed.
Alford was a third-round selection by the New York Giants in the 1998 NFL Draft. In two seasons with the Giants, he recorded two catches for 18 yards and one touchdown. Following his stint in New York, Alford was signed to the Miami Dolphins' practice squad in December of 2000 and was later released prior to the 2001 season.
Alford is currently Purdue's (1994-97) all-time leader in receiving yards (3,029), touchdown catches (31), and is seventh in receptions (164). Alford was honored as a First-Team All-American by Football News following his senior season after setting a school record for receiving yards in a season (1,228).
"I am very excited that we were able to sign Brian and bring him into camp," said Firebirds' Head Coach Mike Dailey. "He is working very hard in practice and hopefully he will become a great Arena Football League player."
Jose Davis comes to the Firebirds after most recently playing for the 2002 NIFL Champion Ohio Valley (West Virginia) Greyhounds. Prior to his stint with the Greyhounds, Davis was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Davis, a two-year starter at Kent St., holds every career passing and total offensive records in the school's history, including total offensive yards (7,331), passing yards (6,772), and touchdown passes (57). He also owns the Mid-American Conference single-game records of 551 passing yards and eight touchdowns passes. Davis will be the fifth quarterback currently on the Firebirds' preseason roster.
In other personnel moves, the Firebirds have waived WR/DB Frank Cutolo and OL/DL Brian Creel, activated OL/DL John Sikora from the team's refused to report list and have placed OS Donald Shoals on the injured reserve list.
The 2003 season marks the historic debut of the AFL on NBC. The network will broadcast 71 games next season, including all playoff games and ArenaBowl XVII on June 22. The Firebirds kick off the 2003 regular season on Sunday, February 2nd on the road against the Detroit Fury which will be aired on UPN Indiana. The Birds' home opener is slated for Sunday, February, 16th versus the Chicago Rush live on NBC Sports.
