Firebirds' Jay Jones Retires

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Firebirds' wide receiver/defensive back Jay Jones has announced his retirement from the Arena Football League the team announced today. Jones was recently hired as the running backs coach for the Naval Academy (Prep School) in Newport, RI.

Jones, a six-year veteran of the AFL, spent his entire career with the Firebirds organization. In 77 games, Jones caught 197 passes for 2,165 yards and 36 touchdowns. Defensively, Jones recorded 159 tackles, six interceptions, 26 pass break-ups, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Early in his career, Jones was the Firebirds' primary kick returner, totaling 110 returns for 2,061 yards and two touchdowns.

Jones had his best season as a professional in 2001 when he had 50 receptions for 719 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also tallied 40 tackles and four interceptions earning 2nd Team All-Arena honors.

"I had a great time playing in the Arena Football League for the Indiana Firebirds," said Jones. "I want to thank the entire Firebirds organization for the opportunity they gave to me. "

Jones continued, "I wanted to start my coaching career and this opportunity was a great situation for me and my family."
