Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Fayetteville FireAntz scored two goals in the third period and added another in overtime to steal a 5-4 victory over the Augusta RiverHawks Saturday night at the James Brown Arena in Augusta. The overtime loss snaps a 5-game winning streak for the RiverHawks, but they did earn a point in the standings for forcing the extra frame.
Just one minute into overtime FireAntz forward Mike Forgie took a pass from Danny Markovich that sprung a 2-on-1. Forgie looked off the RiverHawks' defender by faking the pass, and firing a perfectly placed a shot right over RiverHawks' goaltender BJ O'Brien's shoulder and under the crossbar for the winning goal.
The win boosts the FireAntz' record to 2-2-1, while the RiverHawks fall to 6-1-1.
The RiverHawks jumped out to a first-period lead in unorthodox fashion. Forward Travis Dunstall took a pass from Branden Kosolofsky and sent the puck across the slot to Matt Auffrey, but Auffrey had the puck jump over his stick as he attempted to shoot. The FireAntz could not clear the play and Dunstall found the loose puck in the crease and slid it past FireAntz goaltender Jeff Rose.
The RiverHawks' lead lasted through the first period, but it took just over three minutes of the second period for the FireAntz to tie the game. Josh McQuade had an inside-out deke turned away, but he was able to recover and let loose a snap-shot from the slot that beat O'Brien.
It would take just three additional minutes for the RiverHawks to regain the lead. Forward Lucas Labelle took the puck from the neutral zone and took it wide with speed beating the FireAntz defenders to the net and sneaking the puck past Rose.
The FireAntz would tie the game yet again in the second period. The RiverHawks managed to kill off a two-minute 5-on-3 disadvantage, but Chris Rebernik would sneak in just seconds later and put a pretty move on O'Brien that resulted in him slipping it into the RiverHawks' net. However, the RiverHawks would take the lead one more time before the end of the period. RiverHawks' forward Branden Kosolofsky scored his first goal since rejoining the RiverHawks' roster, firing a snap-shot through Rose's legs.
The lead would get extended to two-goals in the third period when Jesse Echternach would score for the RiverHawks, but two FireAntz goals would force overtime and give Forgie the chance to score the winner, one by Josh McQuade and one by Brett Needham.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, November 25th as they play the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the James Brown Arena box office.
