Tupelo FireAnts News Release

Tupelo, MS--The Tupelo FireAnts (0-2) will take on the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (0-2) this Friday night at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo starting at 7:30pm.

The FireAnts come into Friday’s game after falling to the Peoria Rough Riders last Saturday night, 53-25.

The Tupelo offense is led by quarterback Tommy Miller, UIF’s second-leading passer, with 376 yards. His main targets will be wide receivers Chris Rainey, Jamie Armstrong, and Darryl Carter, who is currently third in the league in yards receiving (108). The ground attack features Joe Gunn, and Rico McDonald, who leads the ‘Ants in scoring with 30 points, and is sixth in rushing yards (76). Clearing the way for the running game are offensive linemen James Bridges, Vincent Hunt, and William Stewart. On defense, Mancell Elam and Patrick Craig lead the charge on the line with one sack each. Linebacker Ricky Franklin is fourth in UIF in tackles (15). The defensive backs are led by Michael Gholar, who leads the league in tackles (16) and passes broken up (6), as well as Bobby Hill (10 tackles). Joining them in the backfield will be Terrell Sutton, who had a pass reception and an interception in his FireAnts debut last week. Place-kicker John Michael Marlin is second in the league in field goal percentage, at 67% (2 for 3). Returning kicks will be Bobby “The Ant” Hill, who is third in UIF in kick return yardage (239 yards).

A win for Tupelo on Friday, combined with a Tennessee Valley Raptors loss, could move the FireAnts into third place in the UIF South Division. After Friday night’s game, the FireAnts will wrap up their four-game home stand versus the Evansville BlueCats (1-0) at the BancorpSouth Center on April 8th.

The Ohio Valley Greyhounds enter Friday’s game versus the ‘Ants on a two-game losing streak, following a heartbreaking 63-62 loss at Rupp Arena versus the Lexington Horsemen last Saturday night.

Ohio Valley’s offense is led by rookie quarterback Zac Bruney (25/46, 330 yards, 7TD). His main targets are wideouts Willie Austin (135 yards) and Greg Muckerson (118 yards), who are first and second in the league in receiving yards, respectively. The ground game is led by halfback Lamonte Coleman (68 yards, 2TD). The defense is led by Lewis Daniels (13.5 tackles), Shawn Hackett (15 tackles), and former Buffalo Bill, Daryon Brutley (3 tackles), who made his UIF debut last week.
