FireAnts Begin Push for Playoffs

June 15, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Tupelo FireAnts News Release

Tupelo, MS--With three weeks left in the National Indoor Football League's regular season, the Tupelo FireAnts find themselves right in the middle of a serious playoff push.

As the FireAnts have their sights set on entering post season play for the first time, things are looking up for the Tupelo team. Last week, the NIFL revised their 2004 Playoff format, which expanded the field of teams that enter the playoffs from four to six. The top six teams in both the Atlantic and Pacific Conferences will qualify for the playoffs, based on overall record. If teams are tied, there is a series of tiebreakers that the league follows, starting with head-to-head records.

During the first week of the playoffs, the top two seeds in the conference will enjoy a bye as the Number 6 seed will play at Number 3, and the Number 5 seed will play at Number 4. The following week of playoffs, the top two seeds will host the winners of the contests played after being reseeded.

With a FireAnts win over the Evansville BlueCats on Saturday, Tupelo now finds themselves as the fourth seed in the Atlantic Conference. The race is so tight in the Atlantic, that no team has officially clinched a playoff berth as of yet. And before the end of the regular season, the FireAnts have the opportunity to rise in the playoff standings if they keep one thing constant...winning.

You can catch the FireAnts back in action this Saturday as Tupelo plays a special game added to the 2004 home schedule. Your FireAnts will take on the visiting Fort Wayne Freedom starting at 7:05pm on Saturday, June 19th. Tickets are on sale now by calling the BancorpSouth Center Box Office at 841-6528.
