Fire Offense Looks To Continue Hot Streak

June 15, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Louisville Fire News Release

Louisville, KY - The Louisville Fire (5-5) travel to the Albany Conquest (5-5) this week for an eastern division battle with the Fire looking to get on the winning side of .500 and the Conquest searching for revenge. The last time these two ball clubs met the Fire took advantage of the Conquest in a 51-38 victory. The potent Fire offense features the reigning af2 Schutt Offensive Player of the Week QB Brett Dietz, 126.2 passer efficiency rating - 71.3 percent pass completions, and WR Rob Mager, 1,242 receiving yards - 32 touchdowns. Having the spotlight on these two players is not to take anything away from the dangerous WR Lance Taylor, 623 receiving yards - 17 touchdowns, and sure handed WR Dennis Fryzel, 544 receiving yards - 8 touchdowns. The Fire has a blazing offense that will sure to be a force to reckon with.

Even though the Fire has firepower in its offensive corner, the Conquest has talent to match. The Conquest offense is led by QB Ryan Vena, 108.4 passer efficiency rating - 62.6 percent pass completions, and a committee of receivers in WR Manwel Talbert, 774 receiving yards - 12 touchdowns, WR Jim Jones, 604 receiving yards - 11 touchdowns, and WR Antwan Williams, 244 receiving yards - 5 touchdowns. One area the Fire must focus on is stopping the rushing attack of the Conquest. The Conquest's leading rusher is no other than Vena who has racked up 135 net rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns so far this season. The 135 yards Vena has accumulated this season is more than the total net rushing yards the entire Fire squad has been able to produce.

The Fire, ranked 8th, and the Conquest, ranked 5th, both have top ten offenses so expect this game to be a shootout. The Conquest offense will try to take advantage of the 22nd ranked Fire defense and build on the 38 points they scored in the first meeting this season. Don't count the Fire offense out either against a Conquest defense that is only ranked one spot higher at number 20 tied with the Stockton Lightning.

The Fire enters this week's game leading the series 4-1 against the Conquest. This game is a must-win for both teams as they fight to keep their playoff hopes alive. Even though the loser of this contest is not eliminated from playoff contention, a win would make it easier to secure a spot in the post-season. The winner of this game has a chance to take the number two spot in the eastern division and depending how things play out in the next couple of weeks could vie for the division top spot currently held by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers with a 7-3 record. The game is set to kick-off at 7:00 P.M. Saturday night and can be heard on 1080-AM or louisvillefirefootball.com.
