Figaro: Back at Home, Back to Basics
April 18, 2019 - National Arena League (NAL)
Massachusetts Pirates News Release
Defensive back Lubern Figaro had always enjoyed success playing in front of his hometown fans. Figaro, a native from Everett, MA, was a two-sport star at Everett High School just an hour drive from the DCU Center in Worcester. At Everett he was a starting defensive back and shooting guard on the Basketball team.
Then Figaro was off to the Big 10 and the University of Wisconsin. After four successful seasons he signed an NFL contract and went to camp with the Cleveland Browns. A look from the Salt Lake Stallions of the AAF followed. Ultimately he wound up back where it all began, signing with the Massachusetts Pirates of the National Arena League, a place where family and friends can watch him play and share in his success.
Last Saturday night the defending league champion Carolina Cobras ruined the homecoming with a humbling 54-22 loss. Now Figaro and the Pirates need to put the loss behind them quickly as they travel to Carolina for a rematch with the Cobras this Saturday night.
The surroundings may have been familiar but the game was not. After his first professional arena football game Figaro feels he is adapting to the indoor contest quickly but not without some challenges.
"It was tough at first, but the more film that you watch the better you understand the concepts. At first, the pace was different, but I just need another game under my belt."
When asked what it was like playing in front of the home crowd at the DCU Center for the first time Figaro emphasizes that the crowd had the teams' back, no matter what the score.
"It was pretty cool, man. There has been a lot of times where I played in front of fans but not from the Boston area," says Figaro. "It was exciting and it was good to be back home."
After Carolina QB Charles McCullum's monster game which featured six touchdown passes, Figaro shared his insight on how to keep the Cobras from striking distance this time around simply stating, "We just need to play our game. We need to believe in what the coaches are always talking about and practice what they preach. We just have to do what we have to do."
