TRENTON - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats rallied back from a big deficit but couldn't retake the lead, and eventually fell 7-6 to the Trenton Thunder Monday night at ARM & HAMMER Park in Trenton.
New Hampshire (20-22) lost for the third time in the last four games and fifth time in the last seven. The Thunder (23-19) chased the Fisher Cats' starting pitcher within the first two innings, riding a five-run second frame to a huge lead. The Fisher Cats squandered a chance to return to .500.
The Fisher Cats drew first blood in the top of the first inning against Trenton starting pitcher Cale Coshow. The righty walked Roemon Fields and Rowdy Tellez before Matt Dean singled to load the bases with one out. After Dwight Smith, Jr. fanned, Wilkin Castillo cracked a two-run single to left, putting New Hampshire up 2-0.
Trenton answered in the bottom of the first against Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson, who walked Mark Payton and Tyler Austin with one out. After he fanned Lane Adams, Dawson allowed Kyle Higashioka to double home Austin, making it 2-1.
The Thunder exploded in the bottom of the second inning after Dawson walked leadoff man Dante Bichette, Jr. Cito Culver cracked a one-out single, and Payton doubled with two outs to score Bichette and Culver. Austin, Adams and Higashioka hit consecutive singles, bringing in three more runs and putting Trenton out in front 6-2.
The Fisher Cats drew closer in the top of the fourth. Ian Parmley and Christian Lopes hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, and Jon Berti walked with one out to load the bases. Fields singled Parmley and Lopes home, and Berti came in to score on an RBI groundout by Rowdy Tellez. With Fields at third, Matt Dean grounded out to end the inning with New Hampshire trailing 6-5.
New Hampshire tied the game in the top of the sixth. Flores singled against Trenton reliever Matt Tracy (W, 3-1), and moved to second on a single by Berti. Fields then sliced his own single past Dan Fiorito at third, scoring Flores and tying the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the inning, Trenton retook the lead. Austin singled with one out against Chris Smith (L, 0-2), who then walked Adams and Higashioka to load the bases. Billy Fleming hit a bouncer to shortstop to score Austin and give Trenton the 7-6 lead. Alex Smith took it from there, earning his second save with two perfect innings.
Dawson took a no-decision despite allowing a season-worst six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two in 1.2 innings. Daniel Schlereth gave up three hits and three walks, but no runs while striking out one over two innings. Chris Smith took the loss, giving up a run on one hit and two walks while fanning one. Murphy Smith gave up a walk in two shutout innings, striking out two.
The Fisher Cats will look to get back in the win column Tuesday night, with lefty John Anderson making the start for New Hampshire against Trenton southpaw Daniel Camarena. First pitch is at 7 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.
