Fielders Top JackHammers in Slugfest, 13-9

JOLIET, IL - There was no shortage of offense Sunday afternoon at Silver Cross Field where the Lake County Fielders outslugged the Joliet JackHammers 13-9. The two teams combined for 22 runs and 38 hits as the JackHammers took two of three from the Fielders.

Lake County (4-7) jumped out to a 10-0 lead, sending 13 hitters to the plate in the second inning scoring nine times. Eric Suttle, Joe Ramos and Anthony Esquer had consecutive RBI singles and Joey Gomes launched a three run homer off Rory Shortell (0-2) to end his outing. Brian Gartley came on and the Fielders added three more runs on a Josh Short two run double and a Kyle Higgins RBI single.

Joliet (5-5) battled back the entire day, highlighted by a five run fifth. Jonathan Wyatt, Kevin Rios and Brad Correll led off the fifth with back-to-back-to-back home runs off starter John Brownell (1-1) to cut the lead to 11-5. Ryan Basham started the rally back up with a two out double, scoring on a Rafael Mendez single. Jorge Rodriguez made it 11-7 with a single after Justin Justice reached on an infield base hit.

The Fielders plated two more in the seventh to push the lead back to six runs on an Aaron Cone single and a Josh Peterson sacrifice fly against Nathan Ginsberg.

The JackHammers responded with two in the bottom half as Ryan Basham connected on his first home run of the season. Wyatt added his second run batted in with a single to left center off Jake Ruckle.

Brownell earned the victory despite surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits in five innings. The bullpen locked down the win, tossing the final four frames and allowing two runs on six hits.

Shortell was tagged with the loss, lasting 1.1 innings in his second start. The right-hander was charged with seven runs on eight hits. Sean Teague and Nathan Ginsberg each threw three innings out of the bullpen, surrendering a combined three runs.

Wyatt and Justice led the club with three hits apiece with Wyatt driving home a team high two runs.

The JackHammers continue their seven game home stand with four against the Rockford RiverHawks. Bear Bay (0-2) will make his first start at Silver Cross Field opposite Kyle Wright (2-0). The special first pitch time is set for 5:10 p.m. on Memorial Day with a 5:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

- Eight different JackHammers had a multi-hit game

- The 19 hits was a season high, topping the 13 base hits on 5/22 in Fargo
