Field Replacement at Zephyr Field Starts Today

Metairie, LA - Work crews will be at Zephyr Field today and Wednesday removing the infield and outfield turf, as the Zephyrs will be completely replacing their playing surface as part of a $1.27 million bond commission from the State of Louisiana.

The Zephyrs existing turf will be donated to Holy Cross High School, which will use the turf for its baseball field and football practice field on the school's new campus in Gentilly.

Work is also being done at Zephyr Field to fix the outfield retention wall, which is used to hold up the ground supporting the pool, levee, outfield stage and Metairie Bank Home Run Porch.

The turf replacement was necessitated by a record use of the playing surface in 2006 and 2007, with 239 games being played in the last two seasons.

The 2007 season included 76 Zephyrs games including the playoffs, 39 Tulane games, the LSU/UNO Wally Pontiff, Jr. Baseball Classic, and seven high school games as part of the LHSAA 5A State Championship for a total of 123 games this past season.

The new Zephyr Field turf will be installed beginning in February.
