A Heartbreaker of Close Proportions - Demolition Fall 6-5 to Port Huron

By Lee W. Mowen

DAYTON, OHIO - On Teddy Bear Toss Night, seven of tonight's eleven goals were scored in the third on a tremendous comeback battle for the Dayton Demolition. Port Huron however had the last hurrah, with Chris Leveille's third tally with 1:03 left in regulation. Leveille, the shootout winner of the season-opening debut for his Prowlers club at Hara, started and finished the game scoring past Dayton's Louie George.

It all began at the 1:27 mark, with Leveille's first score assisted by Ahmed Mahfouz and Justin Alonzo. Port Huron held onto their 1-0 lead for most of the 1st period, until Cody Milligan commended the teddy bears to the ice. Dayton's first Power Play lighting was at the 19:42 mark, with some assistance from the captain Brian Marks. Milligan scored his seventh goal to tie things up for the first intermission break.

In the 2nd frame, Port Huron scored twice to give themselves some room against Dayton. Chris Leveille wrangled out his second goal at the 6:09 mark, with more Mahfouz and Alonzo magic. The Prowlers scored one more at the 16:40 bookmark, with Dustin Skinner's first finisher of the night. Skinner's Power Play blast was provided from Mahfouz and Alonzo once again, and the Prowlers enjoyed a 3-1 lead after two.

In the 3rd period, Dayton had the fire in their eyes against Andy DiCristofaro. Mike Henderson (4th goal of the year) buried a near-side pass from Jesse Felten and Brett Wall to slash the deficit down to one at the 3:22 clip. Shortly after, Derrick Schwartz scored his first of two on the contest with Tom Tracy and Michael Dolman providing back-up on the Demolition's second Power Play goal of the night. However, Port Huron wasn't finished.

The Prowlers went back on top 4-3 at 7:27 of the 3rd with a Jack Callahan goal, presented by Mark Rivera. Not long after said Prowlers tally, it was former Port Huron defenceman Jide Idowu recording his first score from Felten and Wall to tie things up. With a short time expired from Idowu's goal, it was Dustin Skinner from Leveille and Alonzo to put the visitors up 5-4 for about two minutes.

At the 11:04 point of the 3rd, Derrick Schwartz finishes the rebound redirecting and records his sixth score of the year. Cody Milligan and Michael Dolman help out with the last Demolition score. As time wound down closer to the OT horn, Chris Leveille used his patience to beat Louie George and the Dayton crew 6-5 at the 18:57 mark. Leveille's hat trick finale was assisted by Ryan Devine and Dustin Skinner.

Dayton outshot Port Huron 45-38, falling to 3-4-3 when the Demolition outshoots their opponent. Dayton went 3-for-7 on the Power Play; Port Huron 1-for-4. Louie George took the hard-fought loss with a 32 save performance. DeCristofaro recorded 40 saves tonight to improve to 2-0 vs. Dayton on the year. Dayton falls to 5-8-3 on the year, while Port Huron rolled their seventh straight win improving to 13-4-0.

Derrick Schwartz took home the only star for Dayton with his two goal performance. Justin Alonzo was rewarded the 2nd star with four assists, followed by Chris Leveille's three goal, one assist night.

The teddy fans donated tonight will be making their way to Dayton Children's Hospital early January 2016.

Titans Win Shootout in Brewster

BREWSTER, N.Y. - The Danbury Titans sure needed this one.

Having already suffered a disappointing loss to the first-place Danville Dashers on Saturday, the Titans were in jeopardy of falling even further behind in the Federal Hockey League standings when they trailed the Brewster Bulldogs in the third period Sunday.

However, Bryan Dallaire's power-play goal midway through the third period tied it, and Ryan Patsch and Dean Yakura both scored in the shootout to lift the Titans to a 3-2 victory in the inaugural Border Wars game, played on the outdoor rink at the Brewster Ice Arena. Several hundred fans braved the cold to watch the game.

The Titans had won two straight prior to Saturday's 6-3 loss to Danville at the Danbury Arena, and they needed to get right back into the win column to keep pace in the standings. They finished the weekend in third place behind Danville and Port Huron and will embark on a five-game road trip starting right after Christmas.

"This was huge," Yakura said. "We were on a roll, winning some games and playing some good hockey, and last night we took a step back. We had an important meeting this morning and talked as a collective group, and knew we had to come out with a solid effort for a full 60 minutes. Even though it was an outdoor game and everything was a little bit different, at the end of the day, it still counts for the standings. It was really important for us to get a win here tonight."

Titans goalie Mike Pearless stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced during regulation and overtime, and denied five of the Bulldogs' six shooters in the shootout. Just 19 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime period, Pearless made a sparkling glove save to thwart Ian DeLong, who had already scored two goals on the night. Patsch scored first for Danbury in the shootout, beating Brewster goalie Jeromy Semtner through the five-hole. Nicolai Oklolbistyn scored the lone shootout goal for Brewster. Yakura netted the go-ahead goal, going high to the glove side, and Pearless made one more stop to seal the win.

"We hadn't faced that goaltender before, and he had a pretty solid game," Yakura said of Semtner, who finished with 35 saves. "We actually worked on some shootouts earlier in the week, and I thought that might work in this case. I know some guys were having trouble deaking because the ice wasn't very good. I wanted to shoot the puck. When the ice is tough, that's probably the smarter play."

After a scoreless first period, DeLong put Brewster on the board first at 8:05 of the second period. Kory Helowka tied it for Danbury less than six minutes later. DeLong put Brewster ahead again 2-1 early in the third period, but Dallaire's unassisted blast from the slot on the power play tied it again with 10:19 to go.
