Dashers Run Away in Third, Defeat Danbury 6-3

By Zak McGinniss

DANBURY, CT -- Saturday night saw a clash of winning streaks as the Danbury Titans, winners of their last two games, hosted the Danville Dashers, winners of their last five. In three previous meetings this season, the Titans had won all three in regulation. That would not be the case tonight, as the Dashers would skate away 6-3 winners with 4 unanswered goals, including three in the third period to put the game away. Both Scott Morongell and Gerhett Sargis recorded a goal and 2 assists in the winning effort. The Titans played with a short bench, with David Mead, Matt Caranci, and Tim Richter all unavailable for the game. Danbury would, however, see the return of Phil Bronner, recently called up to the Elmira Jackels of the ECHL.

The Titans started the game by asserting themselves defensively early, allowing only one shot on goal in the first ten minutes of the game. Offensively, they peppered Danville goaltender Matt Anthony with shots and were rewarded at four minutes in as Andrew Kolb scored his first professional goal unasssisted. Kolb picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and was able to split the Dasher defense before sniping a shot past the blocker of Anthony and off the post to give his Titans team a 1-0 lead. Ryan Patsch would double the lead to 2 with his 9th of the season, assisted by Tyler Gjurich and Bryan Dallaire. On the play, Dallaire had driven into the zone and sent a poss to the slot that eventually bounced onto the stick of Gjurich, who hit Patsch in stride for the one timer. Danville would respond with under a minute to go, as former Danbury Whaler Scott Morongell sent a shot that was deflected in the slot past Danbury's Nick Niedert. Morongell's 2nd of the season was assisted by Gehrett Sargis and Aleh Shypitsyn. The Dashers' offense started to show signs of life towards the end of the period, but shots on goal for the first period saw Danbury hold a 14-9 advantage.

The second period would see Danbury continue pressuring offensively, recording another five shots before Danville could get their first, but it was the Dashers who would connect first as Ray Tremblay scored his 3rd of the season, assisted by AJ Tesoriero and Cole Hutchinson to tie the game at 2. Tyler Gjurich would score his 20th of the season to put the Titans back on top halfway through the period, with Mike Driscoll getting the helper. For Gjurich, he extends his current scoring streak to six games, and he has 12 goals in that span. His 20 goals so far in the season lead the league. The Titans' lead would last less than two minutes, as Andrew Hutchinson capitalized on a Danbury turnover in their own zone as goaltender Nick Niedert was left hung out to dry. The period would end tied at three and the stage was set for the third.

The Danbury Titans would again outshoot the Dashers, this time by a margin of 19-6, but it was Dashers who would take advantage of their opportunities. Gehrett Sargis would score first at the 7:16 mark of the 3rd to put Danville in the lead for good, assisted by Dan Turgeon and Scott Morongell. Lester Brown would put the game out of reach with a worthy individual effort. First, he was able to deke his way around Danbury defender Aaron Atwell and then outwait goaltender Nick Niedert before sending the puck just under the crossbar for his 10th of the season. Dan Turgeon would add an empty net goal, but not before the Danbury Titans had a controversial goal called back due to a high stick. Phil Bronner seemingly had waited until a fluttering puck was below the crossbar before directing it out of midair and behind Matt Anthony, but the goal was called off after the referees had conferred.

For the Dashers, it is their first win of the season over the Danbury Titans. They improve to 12-2-0-4, good for 40 points and they remain in first place in the FHL. For the Titans, they drop to 9-1-1-5 and remain in third place. Gehrett Sargis received first star of the game honors with the game winning goal, while Scott Moringell and Ray Tremblay were the second and third stars respectively. The Danbury Titans now will look forward to the first outdoor game in franchise history, a 5:05PM faceoff tomorrow, Sunday night, against the rival Brewster Bulldogs. All fans are strongly encouraged to dress warmly for the game. More information on the Danbury Titans can be found at www.danburytitans.com or by calling 844-DT-HOCKEY.
