Demolition Down Titans in Shootout 5-4
By Lee W. Mowen
DAYTON, OHIO- After a rough four game trip in the Northeast, the Dayton Demolition came to battle back home at Hara Arena. For the first of two home games this February weekend, the Danbury Titans came to play in the Gem City.
Both teams battled through a scoreless 1st Period, with Danbury blasting shots left and right on Jo St. Pierre's home debut. The Titans outshot the Wrecking Crew 18-7 in the first frame. Mike Pearless and St. Pierre's shutouts were gone quickly into the 2nd period, with a Ryan Patsch tap from Tyler Gjurich and John Scorcia fifty-eight seconds in. Dayton answered back quickly with the first Power Play goal of the game, from Martin Uhnak (from Brian Marks and Jacques Lamoureux.) Shortly after the tying offer, Danbury struck twice to build their biggest lead of the game.
Dean Yakura's first of two on the night happened at the 3:16 mark with some Brett Liscomb direction. About three and half minutes later, Gjurich scored his 40th goal of the season, along with Yakura and Scorcia breaking open space on the near side. Danbury went up by two, only to have the Demolition tie it up closing the 2nd Period.
Jesse Felten stormed the left wing of the attacking zone, zipping an unassisted tally passed Pearless to cut the deficit down to one. Dayton ties it late in the 2nd with Lamoureux burying a loose puck past the stretched-out Titan goalie, with Kozlak and Uhnak delivering.
Both teams exchanged a goal in the 3rd period, as Yakura scored again with Liscomb and Mike Driscoll's help at the 3:26 mark. Michael Dolman answered the call to keep the game knotted, as he sails a shot past Pearless with Felten and Myles McCauley driving. Both teams stayed the course throughout a wild third period and a close Overtime frame, as a Shootout was the only way to solve things tonight.
Dayton's Martin Uhnak and Jesse Felten were the scorers of the SO frame, and St. Pierre kept the high-powered Titans shooters at bay, only allowing Tyler Gjurich to connect once. Dayton took the contest 5-4 after the dust settled on Pink the Rink Night.
With the win, Dayton improved to 11-22-3 on the year and Danbury fell to 26-11-4 on the year. Jacques Lamoureux was the 3rd Star of the match, tallying a goal and an assist on the night. Danbury's Dean Yakura was the 2nd star with a pair of goals and one assist, and Dayton's Jesse Felten was the 1st Star with a goal, an assist, and a score in the shootout.
These teams will meet up again Sunday afternoon at 5:00 at Hara Arena. For broadcasting information and tickets, visit Demolitionhockey.com.
