Fernandez Named USHL Defenseman of the Week

The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced Monday that Stars defenseman Antonio Fernandez has been named Defenseman of the Week for Week 27 of the 2022-23 season.
Fernandez, 19, recorded multi-point efforts in two-of-three of the Stars' games last week and played a crucial part in Lincoln taking four-of-six points. He opened the week up with the eventual game-winning goal and an assist on the go-ahead goal in Lincoln's 3-2 win over Tri-City on March 29. Fernandez followed that up by recording an assist on Doug Grimes' game-tying goal on Friday before adding two more assists on Saturday.
This is Fernandez's first time being named a USHL Defenseman of the Week this season. He has recorded points in each of his last four games (2+4), is tied for fourth among USHL defensemen with 10 goals and is tied for seventh among USHL defensemen with 35 points. Fernandez has 65 points (24+43) in 114 career games with the Stars and his 35 points this season (10+25) are three more than last year (14+18) in 10 fewer games.
"It's not about worrying about points and goals," Fernandez. "It's about playing the right way. Points will come and goals will come. When you get the puck you've just got to rip it."
Fernandez is the sixth Star to be honored with a USHL Player of the Week award and the fourth time that a defensemen has won Defenseman of the Week after Boston Buckberger won Defenseman of the Week for Weeks 5 and 21 while Cole Crusberg-Roseen also won it for Week 8. Goaltender Cameron Whitehead has twice won USHL Goaltender of the Week for Weeks 1 and 16.
Fernandez and the Stars have a home-and-home series against the Omaha Lancers this weekend with Saturday's 6:05 p.m. game taking place at the Ice Box. It's Hockey Fight Cancer Night at the Ice Box with a postgame jersey auction to follow.
