Jordan Bernier nets GWG and Tommy Lee stops 28 in win

LEWISTON, Maine - The Brooklyn Aviators scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Akwesasne Warriors 3-2 at the Maine Event on Thursday night in Federal Hockey League action at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Aviators' rookie forward Jordan Bernier snapped a 2-2 tied after he deposited the game-winning goal on the power play at the 14:14 mark of the final period from Andrew Scampoli.

The first period saw great end-to-end action as both teams generated high quality scoring chances. However, it was the Warriors striking first on the power play at the 15:55 spot of the opening frame. Miguel Delisle netted his first of the season after he put home a loose rebound in front of Aviators' netminder Tommy Lee, who stopped 15 of 16 shots in the first for Brooklyn.

Former NHL-forward Pierre Dagenais gave the Warriors as 2-0 edge 7:03 into the second period. Dagenais was left alone on the doorstep and put home a one-timer from line-mate Patrice Brunet from the right wing corner.

The Aviators though, cut the lead in half at 2-1 just 3:57 later, as Chris Ferrazoli cashed in on a rebound to tally his first marker of the season. Bernier threw the puck in front of Akwesasne goaltender David Plouffe, but the puck bounced behind him and landed on Ferazzoli's stick who had a wide open net.

Rookie left-winger Anthony Iaquinto tied the game for Brooklyn at the 13:23 mark of the third period when he snapped a short side shot over Plouffe's glove.

Lee made 27 stops en route to his first victory in an Aviators' jersey, while Plouffe is charged with the loss despite turning aside 39 shots.

The Aviators head to Massachusetts on Friday to take on the Cape Cod Bluefins at 7:05 p.m. at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Don't miss any of the action this season, as great tickets are still available. Log on to www.brooklynaviators.com or call 718-758-7580 today!

WHALERS COME BACK AND BEAT OUTLAWS 5-4

DANBURY, CT - October 27, 2011

Hockey is a game of emotion and momentum can flip sides in an instant. In a season opener filled with electricity, excitement, and sentiment, the Danbury Whalers handed former coach Chris Firriolo his first loss with his new team, as the Whalers rallied for three goals in the final period to defeat the New Jersey Outlaws 5-4. Whalers forward Matt Caranci scored with 21 seconds left to complete the comeback and send the 1,838 in attendance home happy.

Opening night is always special in sports. In Danbury, when the Whalers begin their second season against their former coach now leading an expansion franchise, it's hard to match. Section 102 sang the anthem a cappella. New Jersey scored first to ruin the fun, but Chris Seifert scored with his new linemates Martin Moucha and Nick Deschenes. Two power play goals gave the Outlaws a 3-1 lead to end the first, a period which saw them make repeated contact with Whalers goalie Nick Neidert. One incident required the training staff's attention, as concerned fans looked on. Nick stayed in the game but allowed a fourth goal early in the second period. Joe Dabkowski cut the deficit to 4-2 late in the second and scored again in the third to make it a 1-goal game. Deschenes, the new team captain, scored to tie the game. The third became a closely-played physical battle, as the Outlaws slowed their frantic pace to go punch-for-punch with the Whalers. The Whalers' hard checking style took over and wore down their opponents. In the last half-minute, as the game seemed destined for overtime, Outlaws goalie Dan McWhinney went to play the puck behind the net. There Devin Guy, who fought twice earlier, checked him into the boards, leaving the net open, and Caranci buried home the loose puck to send fans into hysteria. Niedert got the win, finishing with 40 saves on 44 shots.

After the game, owner Alan Friedman praised his players on their tenacity. "One of the most exciting games since Marty Moucha's ot win last season. This group of guys has the best attitude in the league. Walking through the locker room after the game, I heard a player say how this win was a win for Danbury." The teams will face off tomorrow at the Capital One Ice Vault in Wayne as the Outlaws make their debut at home. The Whalers return to Danbury Saturday as they host Cape Cod, starting at 7:35 PM.
