Cape Cod Swims Past Dashers
Danville, IL - After a long road trip, the Danville Dashers were looking forward to finally playing some home contests. First up in the home-stand was the Cape Cod Bluefins. With both teams occupying the bottom half of the standings, it was sure to be a tight game. They would not disappoint.
Cape Cod got on the board early after a pair of Dashers' tripping penalties provided the Bluefins with a two-man advantage. The powerplay goal came off the stick of Kevin Hill with help from Andrew Hutton and Steve Kelley. It would be the only statistical highlights of the period. Cape Cod would carry a majority of the play compiling fourteen shots to Danville's seven. Both goaltenders exchanged several big saves apiece to keep the score close and low to end the first period.
The Bluefins would open the scoring in the second frame as well with a rebound tip from Brad Surdam. Assists went to Kevin Hill and Corey Bellamy. The team from the East would score again just seconds later with a strike from David Lun (assists to AJ Tesoriero and Matt Harrington). Igor Batora would stop the bleeding when his blast from near the blueline somehow bounced its way past the Bluefins' netminder. Billy Hunt would earn an assist on Danville's opening goal. Joe Pace would add another just seconds after a failed powerplay opportunity with help from Dean Yakura. Yakura would jump to the goalscorers column just moments later (assists to Ray Tremblay and Joe Pace) when he beat the goalie stick side to bring the score even at three apiece. It would be the last scoring action of the period and meant that Danville erased what had been a three goal advantage for Cape Cod.
A tie score to open the final regulation meant that both teams an equal opportunity to walk away with three points in the standings to kickoff the back-to-back affair. It would only take four minutes for the Dashers to take their first lead of the game on a goal from Dustin Skinner. Assists would be credited to team captain Chris Affinati and Hiro Kobayashi. The Bluefins would answer quickly when David Lun found the net for the second time (Kyle Granville on the assist). Cape Cod would then retake the lead thanks to a strike from Kevin McCreedy with picking up his second assist of the night, along with David Lun, after the puck appeared to bounced oddly off the official's skate, leading to the scoring opportunity. Tyler O'Brian made the save of the game off a one-timer shot when Dean Yakura got loose only feet from the Bluefins' net. The quick flash of the trapper prevented what would have been a game-tying goal. It would also prove to ultimately be the game winning save at it would be the last.
Cape Cod demonstrated a great sense of discipline as they only allowed Danville one powerplay opportunity the entire contest. The final of 5-4 in the favor of the Bluefins meant that the road team picked up three precious points in the league standings, while Danville continues to improve and keep games close. The final shot total showed visitors with a 34-28 advantage.
The same two teams will go to battle Friday night as Danville tries to avenge the Thursday night loss. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors/12 and under and can be purchased at the David S. Palmer Arena box office. Game time is 7:05 local time.
