Privateers Record First Victory Over Aviators This Season
ALEXANDRIA BAY, New York - The 1000 Islands Privateers picked up their first victory over the Brooklyn Aviators this season with a 4-1 win on Friday night at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center in Federal Hockey League action.
Brad Smulders, Adam McCallister, Chad Bazin, and Paul Kelly each had two points on the night for the Privateers, and goalie Matt Anthony recorded 32 saves in the victory.
After some back and forth action to kick off the first period, Brooklyn would go on two power play chances, however could not convert on the man advantages. Building off their two penalty kills, 1000 Islands struck first late in the frame to take a 1-0 lead. Kelly raced over the A's blueline along the left wing, froze Brooklyn goalie Pete Dundovich long enough to move him out of position and found a streaking Smulders back door for his 15th goal of the season at the 16:22 mark.
1000 Islands doubled their lead 6:57 into the middle period, 2-0, after Ryan Pearson snapped home the puck from the left wing circle. Brooklyn quickly answered 16-seconds later, as Andrew Scampoli recorded his second goal of the season on a redirection in front of Anthony. Defenseman Henry Coxe let a shot go from the right point and Scampoli deflected the puck through the five-hole of Anthony to cut deficit to 2-1.
The Privateers regained their two-goal edge, 3-1, halfway through the third and final period. Kelly got behind the Aviators defense and tapped in the pass from Bazin, who threw the puck towards the net from the right wing circle. McCallister sealed it with an empty netter for 1000 Islands with 13-seconds left.
Dundovich is charged with the loss despite turning aside 30 shots.

Bluefins Down Federals Again
Hyannis, MA
Similar to their previous matchup against the Delaware Federals and this time playing without their leading scorer Billy Tibbetts (Healthy Scratch), the Bluefins of Cape Cod came out strong against an inexperienced Federal League squad and again lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 12 to 1. It was the Fins second straight victory after dropping 7 straight.
Corey Bellamy paced the Bluefin attack with 3 goals and an assist and goalie Chris Testa made 20 saves to record his 5th win of the season. It was Bellamy's first hat trick of his young professional career.
The game featured several big hits and many odd man rushes. The Fins scored 4 goals in the first period, 6 in the second and 2 in the third. The Federals managed to score their only goal of the game at the 13:21 mark of the second period when Mike Guerra beat Testa with a nice wrist shot off of a Kyle Granville rebound. The goalies for the Federals, Mike DiLorenzo and Brent Troyan, despite letting in the 12 goals made many great saves in a valiant effort.
"The boys came out hungry and it's nice to have won 2 in a row but tomorrow will be a different team in Akwesasne. We better be ready" said Bluefins coach Mike Nugnes.
The Bluefins play again tonight at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center against the FHL's leading scorer Pierre Dagenais and the high flying Akwesasne Warriors. Game time is at 7:05 pm and all are encouraged to come out and support the community and the Bluefins. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for Students & Senior Citizens. Also, as part of the Bluefins ongoing commitment to youth hockey, all youth hockey players who wear their game jerseys will receive free admission.

WHALERS DOMINATE THIRD PERIOD, DEFEAT WARRIORS 6-2
DANBURY, CT
Danbury Whalers coach Phil Esposito has been working the past few weeks with injuries and making due with a shorter bench. Tonight, he had a full complement of players and utilized them fully. The Whalers lit the lamp four times in the final period and Peter Vetri made 38 saves as the Whalers defeated the defending FHL champion Akwesasne Warriors 6-2 before 1,927 at the Danbury Ice Arena in Federal Hockey League action.
The Whalers got an early lead from one of their returning players, as Greg Holt tallied his 10th goal of the season from Carlo Ricci and Martin Moucha at 9:33 of the first period. A fluke play in front gave Miguel Delisle the tying goal on the power play with eight seconds left in the first period. The second period was a tense contest of wills, boiling over into a furious fight between Whalers toughguy and FHL penalty minutes leader Corey Fulton and Warriors enforcer Paul Shantz. The offensive chances came and went in the middle stanza, with the lone opportunity cashed in by Devin Guy. Alec Kirschner sprung Guy who tapped it past Warriors netminder David Plouffe at 13:55. The Whalers carried the one-goal into the third period and expanded it quickly. Matt Moffat continued his tear just 47 seconds into the final frame, as Kelly Miller and Moucha set him up on the doorstep for his 13th of the year. 29 seconds later, rookie Carlo Ricci got his fourth of the season from Holt and Lynn Beedle. The Warriors continued to press Vetri but he and the Whalers skaters were able to keep the lead. Kirschner ripped a shot high over Plouffe's shoulder for a 5-1 lead at 8:54 of the third period. Beedle and Guy drew the assists on Kirschner's team-leading 18th goal of the campaign. The goal signaled the end of Plouffe's evening and Adam Thompson took over in net. There was some more tension later in the third as Michael Stacey tried to engage Guy in a fight but Guy refused. Both received minors, but Guy got the last laugh as he made it 6-1 on the power play at 18:52. Sean O'Malley and Chris Seifert drew the assists on Guy's ninth of the season. Akwesasne did get a final goal from Martin Beaulne on a tip-in with one second to go. The Whalers defense limited league-leading scorer Pierre Dagenais to one assist and Vetri stopped him 10 times.
The Whalers will face the Delaware Federals tomorrow at 7:35 PM. The team will wear their blue alternate jerseys which will be available for auction after the contest. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games. Get your tickets by visiting thedanburywhalers.com or by calling 973-713-7547.
Second Period Struggles Sink Danville Against League Leaders
The Danville Dashers were looking to make a statement when the first place New Jersey Outlaws skated into Danville. The contest would be the next to last in a home stand for Danville dating back to early December. Fans at the David S. Palmer arena were treated to a physical, goal-filled battle between the league leaders and the league bottom feeders.
Despite being on their defensive heals for most of the opening 14 minutes of period number one, it was the Dashers who drew first blood on the scoreboard. Justin Barr found his way behind the Outlaws' defense after a slick pass from Lee McClure. Joe Pace also registered an assist on the play. It would be all the scoring as both goaltenders would shut things down until the break. The ten shots registered by New Jersey seemed very meager considering the amount of time spent in the Dashers' defensive zone. Danville made the most of their limited puck control in the Outlaws' end of the ice by picking up nine shots to their credit.
It was New Jersey's turn to score the opening goal when play resumed. Travis Kauffeldt found himself alone in front of Dashers' goalie, Nick Wydock, with enough time for a couple dekes before putting the biscuit in the basket. John Goffredo received the lone assist on the goal (an assist was later added to Nathan Oke). Minutes later, on a two man advantage, the Outlaws took the lead on on a second goal by Kauffeldt. He buried a one-timer on a pass from Kevin Cooper (second assist went to Nathan Oke). Kauffeldt would complete the natural hat-trick seconds later. It would also give him his second powerplay goal on the night with help from Gentry Zollars and Lawne Snyder. The third straight goal would drive Wydock from his cage. New Jersey's special teams goal streak wouldn't stop there. A fourth Outlaws' unanswered goal came off the stick of Goffredo after he converted a breakaway opportunity while his side was playing a man down. Matt Miller would run the unanswered goal streak to five with assists to Billy McCreary and Goffredo. Among all the New Jersey goals would be a fairly evenly matched fight between Dashers' Hiro Kobayashi and New Jersey's Tyler Barr. It would not be the only controversy for Barr in the match. That would be it for the period on the scoresheet as the buzzer to end the period was undoubtedly a welcome sound to the Dashers' faithful.
The third period would open with a mountain to climb for Danville. The Dashers didn't help their cause by taking two penatlies on the same play to award New Jersey with a two minute, two man advantage. However, the Dashers' penalty kill stood tall and prevented another Outlaws' strike. Kauffeldt would move from the scoring column to the fighting column when he engaged in a scrap with Chris Affinati. Affinati, despite a considerable size difference, held his own nicely. Matt Miller would put the Outlaws up by five goals with help from Matt Puntureri and McCreary. Danville would finally stop the bleeding with a powerplay goal from Dustin Skinner (assists to Ky Moje and McClure). The Dashers would continue to close the gap just minutes later when Igor Batora found the net on another powerplay advantage with assists from Ray Tremblay and Justin Barr. A second goal from Barr would pull the Dashers to within two when he found the back of the net after helpers from Matt Cohn and Ky Moje. Zollars would halt the Danville comeback with a goal of his own from Oke and Jason Reese. A Ky Moje goal (assists to Skinner and Barr) and a Nathan Oke shorthanded, empty netter would finish the scoring for the game. A later spear from Tyler Barr would put a scar on the New Jersey victory, earning him a game misconduct for his efforts and bringing his overall penalty minutes total for the game to an astounding twenty-six.
When the dust settled on a penalty and goal filled third period, New Jersey would celebrate an 8-5 advantage. If not for a second period let-down, it may very well have been Danville on top of the goal column. Justin Barr would lead the Dashers in scoring with two goals and two assists. Danville would also walk away with a 38-37 shot total advantage for the contest. The powerplay was working for both teams as the Dashers finished 4-7 and the Outlaws put up a respectable 2-5 result on the man advantage.
Both teams will undoubtedly continue their physical play as the rematch commences Saturday night at 7:05. Danville will play host for the second straight night and look to knock off the number one team in the league before heading on an extended road trip. Tickets for the final homestand game are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors/12 and under.
