FC Edmonton News Release

Edmonton, AB (September 25, 2014) - FC Edmonton (5W-3D-4L) play another crucial match in the club's North American Soccer League (NASL) schedule on Sunday, September 28 (2:00 p.m. MT KO) against the New York Cosmos (4W-4D-4L) presented by HUB International. The Eddies are hosting Spruce Grove Chamber Day in support of Spruce Grove Minor Soccer and the match will also host Shine FM's Faith and Family Day.

"Anytime Giovanni (Savarese) brings his team to Edmonton, we've had real tough games and I expect the same on Sunday," said FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller. "We're hoping that the crowd comes back this Sunday to get behind us and cheer us on. We have to be at our very best to get the result."

Last weekend the Eddies earned a very important three points against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in front of an impressive home crowd. Lance Laing's goal 63 minutes into the match was enough to give FC Edmonton a 1-0 victory. The win sent the Eddies ahead of the Rowdies on goal difference in the 2014 NASL Combined table and they jumped up two spaces in the Fall Standings to third place on 18 points.

Meanwhile, New York faced off against Carolina RailHawks in a goal-filled 5-4 loss. The Cosmos, who had a four-match unbeaten streak snapped, dominated play for large portions of the scoreless first half, clogging up the midfield although the scoring chances were limited for both teams. Against the run of play four minutes into the second half, the RailHawks took a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, midfielder Leo Osaki doubled the RailHawks lead. The Cosmos pulled one goal back in the 64th minute and one minute later, midfielder Enzo Martinez tapped in the rebound to give Carolina a 3-1 lead. In the 67th minute, Carolina made it 4-1. Two minutes later, defender Jimmy Ockford cut the Cosmos deficit to 4-2 Carolina forward Zach Schilawski, who turned in the box and put a shot over the right shoulder of Maurer to increase Carolina's lead to 5-2. The Cosmos, though, would not give up and scored their fourth goal in the 80th minute to end the match 5-4.

FC Edmonton last took on the Cosmos on August 6 at Hoffstra University. The game finished a 0-0 draw, but the Eddies were lucky to escape with a point after going down to 10-men in the 70th minute and a misplaced penalty kick by Marco Senna.
