FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton is pleased to announce Jackson Farmer as the 16th overall draft pick from the 2021 CPL - U SPORTS Draft announced on Friday, January 29 during a live presentation.
FC Edmonton had the 1st and 16th draft picks in the two-round draft with eight picks in each round.
Draftees will be invited to FC Edmonton preseason training, with the hopes of securing a 2021 U SPORTS Development Contract for the upcoming season that allows a student-athlete with one to five years of U SPORTS eligibility remaining to sign with a CPL Club, while preserving their eligibility before returning to U SPORTS competition.
The 25-year-old Edmontonian is in his second year at the University of British Columbia, where he is studying for his Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Farmer (6'2 and 190 pounds) played his first youth soccer with Edmonton Xtreme FC from 2004 to 2009.
He then spent time with Edmonton Juventus from 2009 to 2010 before returning to Xtreme FC for a second stint from 2010-11.
In 2011, Farmer joined the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency program, where in March of that year he was loaned to the Charleston Battery of United Soccer League (USL) Pro, at that time the third tier of the United States Soccer system, as part of the affiliation agreement between the two clubs. Farmer made his professional playing debut on March 22, 2014 against Orlando City SC as a late substitute. In February 2015, Farmer signed to Vancouver's USL side, Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2). Farmer did not return to the club for the 2017 season, and most recently he signed with Calgary Foothills for the 2018 PDL season.
Farmer also has international experience, having received his first call up to the Canadian Men's National Team for two friendlies against Mauritania in September 2013. He made his debut in the first friendly, coming on as an 86th -minute substitute. After his debut with the senior side, Farmer was included on the CanMNT U20 roster that went to 2014 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.
"We are excited to welcome Jackson to our club this pre-season and I am happy to be on the pitch with him again", said Alan Koch, Head Coach. "Jackson is a technically sound defender who has had some exceptional experiences for a young centre back. We hope to help him elevate his game in our environment and provide him with another opportunity in the professional game."
