FC Edmonton (15W-8D-9L) closed out their North American Soccer League (NASL) regular season schedule with a 1-0 loss to Miami FC (10W-10D-12L), October 28 at FIU Stadium. The postseason-bound Eddies once again featured several fresh faces throughout the lineup.
Ariel Martinez scored the lone goal in the match, while goalkeeper Daniel Vega recorded the clean sheet between the woodwork. For the visiting Eddies, goalkeeper Tyson Farago made his third start in the last four matches.
Miami was held out of the attacking third for the opening eight minutes of play before being nearly rewarded with a goal after a defensive miscue saw a strike come from distance coming off of Farago's hands before striking the post.
Miami sent a second attempt towards goal on 16 minutes, as Farfan's attempt through traffic was well-stopped by Farago in goal. Poku followed up moments after, but his strike to the top of goal went off the crossbar to keep the match scoreless. Miami chances in the first half continued to mount, as a Ritchie Ryan-taken free kick on the half-hour mark skimmed just over the crossbar.
At the other end of the pitch, Eddies striker Tomi Ameobi showed his pace after chasing down a ball from midfield into the attacking third. The Newcastle native worked around his defender and sent a strike just wide left from inside 18 yards-Edmonton's top opportunity of the opening half.
Both teams would head into the break tied 0-0.
The post came up big for the Eddies once again in the second half, as a Kwadwo Poku cross from the byline found Jaime Chavez in the box, but his header from in close went off of the post to the home crowd's dismay.
Martinez put the home side up on 66 minutes, sending a right-footed strike from just inside 18 yards past Farago for the 1-0 lead. It was Martinez's second goal of the season against the Eddies.
Looking for the equalizer, the Eddies pushed into the attacking third five minutes from full time, forcing a corner but unable to capitalize on their opportunity in what was an otherwise quiet half on offence. Miami would hold their 1-0 lead through to the final whistle.
"I'm very proud of the players," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated following the match. "Right until the end they were trying to do the right things. It was a great experience for Marko Aleksic and another game for Shamit Shome. I'm disappointed with the goal we gave away of course, but we will regroup and look forward to a fantastic occasion next Saturday.
"Overall the season has been tremendous," Miller added. "The players, the staff, the ownership and our fans of course-it has just been a huge team effort this year. In all honesty, our season will start next Monday in training. I can't wait to get going. I'm hugely disappointed with the result tonight. I never take defeats easily, but I felt it was a hardworking team performance without getting any rewards."
FC Edmonton now turns their focus to the NASL postseason and a November 5 match against Indy Eleven at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Fans can watch the match in Edmonton at Churchill Square, as the Eddies host the inaugural Winter City Footie Fest.
