The Eddies are coming off a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over defending NASL champion New York Cosmos on Wednesday. Aided by the stellar play of goalkeeper Matt VanOekel, the Eddies weathered a lacklustre first half performance with an impressive second half of play to stun the Cosmos with a pair of late goals from veterans Nik Ledgerwood and Daryl Fordyce.
Coming off the bench for an injured Sainey Nyassi, Tomi Ameobi was a man possessed during his time on the pitch, with both Eddies goals coming as a result of Newcastle native's attempts on goal. Wednesday also saw the debut of midfielder Pedro Galvao, while this weekend's fixture could see Canadian youth international Ben Fisk making his Eddies' debut.
Carolina enters Sunday's contest at Clarke Field following a midweek, 2-0 loss to Ottawa Fury FC at TD Place. The 'Hawks put forth an inspired effort, but could not convert on 11 attempts on goal through 90 minutes of play. The Fall Season has been a mixed bag for the Florida-based club, who have amassed a record of 2W-1D-2L early in the season. Midfielder Brian Shriver had led the 'Hawks in scoring in 2016 with five goals scored through 15 matches, while teammates Austin Da Luz and Nazmi Albadawi have three apiece. Seven other 'Hawks have registered at least a goal in 2016.
The Eddies came out on top the last time Carolina came to town, May 22 at Clarke Field. Eddies captain Albert Watson was taken down in the area with just over ten minutes remaining in the match, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty kick opportunity. Fordyce stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted home the lone goal of the match in an eventual 1-0 win for the home side.
"We are going to try and keep the momentum going at home," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. "The players and the fans deserve an enormous amount of credit because Clarke Field is not a pleasant place for teams to come and visit, this is not a holiday camp. I know Carolina's coach very well, they will not be happy they lost on Wednesday, and they have got a talented team of players."
FC Edmonton takes on Carolina RailHawks, 2:00 p.m. MT, July 31 at Clarke Field. The match will be broadcast on City TV in Edmonton, ESPN 3 in the United States and streamed live on www.nasl.com.
