Fayetteville, NC --- A Fayetteville Guard potential and an international honorary team member visited Beaver Dam Elementary School March 8 to enlighten them about the Japanese culture and the importance of discipline.
Visiting Japanese football player Taniguchi Masakuni (Masa)-who has joined the training camp of The Fayetteville Guard-spent time talking to third, fourth and fifth graders about his life in Japan and as a football player. Masa has played football for Duke University, AF teams in Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, Hawaii, Texas and Southern Carolina; in addition to, Canada, Australia and in an Asian Pacific league. He will be returning to Japan March 10, 2005 to begin his police officer training in Tokyo.
Linebacker and former teacher, Al Wilson, spoke to the students about discipline and the importance of "keeping your head in the books" while perusing your dreams. Wilson is a graduate of Elizabeth city and former Carolina Sting Rays player.
In school appearances are only one of the many ways The Fayetteville Guard is reaching out to the youth of the community. Other ways being, Newspapers in Education, reading in classrooms and participating in school fund raisers.
"It is so important to reach out to the youth of the community and give them a positive role model," said team owner Stevie Craig Ammons.
At the end of their visit the players gave away a family four pass for the home opener on April 2nd at the Crown Coliseum against the Odessa Roughnecks. For more information on The Fayetteville Guard and ticket sales log onto www.fayettevilleguard.com.
Guard training camp is taking place, nightly, at the official training facility off Ramsey Street in close proximity to Reid Ross High School. The public is encouraged to come out and cheer on their local players and the future members of "The Football Team for Hometown Heroes."
