Hawgs Training Camp Report

March 8, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release

BACK TO THE FIELD: After a day off Sunday, the Daytona Beach Hawgs returned to practice Monday and saw their defense outshine their offense for most of the two-hour session.

"Before practice, we did a good job of going over everybody's assignments,'' said Head Coach Ervin Bryson.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ON DEFENSE: LB Lavar Simms made good reads on defense while DT Leon Moore delivered a consistent pass rush.

ONE OF THE FEW HIGHLIGHTS ON OFFENSE: WR Michael Bonneville got behind Marcus Washington for a long touchdown reception. "Yeah, the veteran got burnt,'' Bryson chuckled. "We did a good job of setting Marcus up''

THE QB SITUATION: "Ty Lohman had a better day making reads and staying in the pocket, even though the pressure was tough at times. We just need to find a way to get more consistent on offense."

THE LOCALS: The leadership skills of offensive lineman Tommy Moody [Pierson Taylor, Assistant Football Coach at Spruce Creek] may be as important as his playing ability. "Moody's a stud,'' Bryson he has experience playing on the next level. Some of the younger guys don't understand the game yet, but Tommy does a good job of understanding the game and carrying out his assignment."

SAFE FOR NOW: Bryson originally slated Monday as the first cut day, but elected to keep everyone around at least one more day.

INJURIES: Duane Hagstrom (Achilles heel); Patrick Johnson (sprained ankle), Willis Cord (hamstring); Bobby Bass (sore knee); Robert Bailey (groin); Terrance Butler (shoulder), Steve Canidate (dislocated finger) and Mike James (hamstring) all sat out Monday.

NEXT UP: Practice at 4:30 p.m. at Derbyshire Field.
