FRISCO - The Texas Revolution, behind the arm of new quarterback Andrew Jackson and a complete effort from defense and special teams, paved their way to a 64-44 victory over the Amarillo Venom Saturday night at Dr Pepper Arena.
Jackson through four touchdowns - all to LaDon Hudson - and commanded an offense that exploded for 29 points in the second quarter, the most points the team has scored in a quarter since the fourth quarter of Texas' historic 96-95 victory over the Venom April 30, 2017.
Tied at seven late in the first quarter, the Revs tipped the scales. Jason Catchings got pressure on Amarillo quarterback Nate Davis and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Malik Jenkins, who returned the scoop for a 12-yard score. The 14-point run came after Amarillo scored on the first play from scrimmage - a 34-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Xavier Amey. It was the Venom's only lead of the night.
Hudson submitted a top 10 play to SportsCenter in the second quarter. Jackson's pass sailed to the back corner in the final minute putting the ball where only Hudson could catch it - over the wall. Hudson's flip into the first row gave Texas a 43-28 halftime advantage, an advantage they would push to 22 points on the first drive of the second half, a 2-yard scamper from Darius Fudge.
Fudge had 123 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, the first time Fudge has had back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since his illustrious career began in 2009. His 130 yards rushing the previous game against Dallas was only bested by 148 yards he rushed for in 2010 as a member of the Wichita Wild.
Jackson completed 16-of-33 passes for 189 yards - and could have had more. Tarvarres Williams was all alone for a fourth-quarter, cherry-on-top score, but it was dropped. Williams did catch two for 52 yards, including a 38-yarder on the Revs first offensive play. It was the second-longest completed pass of the season and the most points scored in 2018.
Joe Adams fueled special teams with 111 return yards in his first 2018 showing, including a 50-yard kickoff-return TD with 10:49 to go in the third quarter that expanded the Revs lead to 57-36. In the fourth quarter, the defense went to work, allowing just three yards on Amarillo's final four drives.
Frankie Solomon led the defense with six tackles an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and Keonte Grant earned a rare rouge to cap a 22-0 first-half run. Offensive lineman Roy Richard even scored: he recovered a Darius Fudge fumble in the end zone in the second quarter.
Texas hosts the league-leading Duke City Gladiators (7-1) Saturday, hoping to avenge two early-season losses. The Revs have moved within a half game of the CIF's sixth-place spot heading into weekend action, just behind Omaha (4-5) and Bismarck (4-5).
