Fargo-Moorhead comes back for 18-11 win in 10 innings

JOLIET, IL-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (44-26) came back from an 11-7 Joliet lead to score 11 runs over the 9th and 10th innings and beat the Joliet JackHammers 18-11 in 10 innings before 5,505 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night.

The two teams scored ten runs over the first inning. A two-run double by Ruben Salazar (3-5) was the key hit in a three-run first inning for Fargo-Moorhead against Joliet starter Dustin Taylor. The RedHawks took an early 3-0 lead.

The lead for the RedHawks was short-lived, as the JackHammers scored seven runs in the first inning to take a 7-3 lead. Nick McIntyre (1-2) worked a one-out walk and went to second base when Juan Diaz (0-4) was hit by a pitch. Doc Brooks (2-5) hit a single to load the bases before Cory Harris (2-5) lined a two-run single. Joliet came within one run at 3-2.

Wally Backman, Jr. (3-5) hit a grand-slam home run to give the JackHammers a 7-2 lead.

The RedHawks fought back by scoring two runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Joe Mathis (3-5).

Joliet scored a run in the third inning on an RBI double by Joe Hooft (2-4). Joliet took an 8-5 lead on the RBI double by Hooft.

The RedHawks came within one run at 8-7 in the seventh inning before the JackHammers pushed across three runs in the eighth inning. In the 8th, Hooft singled and went to second base on a walk issued to McIntyre. Brooks hit an RBI single to score Hooft and give Joliet a 9-7 lead. Harris hit a two-run double to make it 11-7.

Fargo-Moorhead scored four runs in the ninth inning to tie the game at 11-11 before scoring seven runs in the 10th inning.

Taylor lasted four innings for the JackHammers. Chris Kinsey (0-2) suffered the loss by pitching the last two frames.

Loose Gravel: The crowd of 5,505 fans was the largest of the season at Silver Cross Field.

The JackHammers and RedHawks finish their series on Sunday night. The RedHawks will send LHP Brett Lawson (7-2, 2.42) to the mound against RHP Nate Sevier (4-3, 4.02). It's the AAA Travel Trip Giveaway on Sunday night with autographs on the field after the game.
