Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release
If there is one thing that's certain about the Surprise Fightin' Falcons, it is they know when to get the big hit.
The Falcons won their fifth straight game Tuesday night, rallying in the bottom of the ninth inning for their second straight 7-6 win over the Fullerton Flyers at Surprise Stadium. Billy Brown singled home Paul Powell, who led off the ninth inning with a walk, to give Surprise their eighth win in nine games at home.
Surprise brought a 6-2 lead into the eighth inning, but LHP Craig Frydendall gave up four runs in his Falcons debut to allow Fullerton to tie the game.
But closer Ignacio Estrada Jr. did not allow a run in the ninth, and Surprise won it off of Michael Urvalek and Cameron Flading in the ninth. Urvalek, who walked Powell to start the inning, was credited with the loss. Estrada, who picked up his second save Monday night, earned his first victory of the season.
The Falcons pounded out 15 hits in the game, four from Kevin Brand, who was a home run short of the cycle a night after being ejected for arguing a call. Brand also scored three runs and ignited the team's offense right from the start. His first inning infield single started a two-run burst that gave the Falcons an early 2-1 lead.
C Greg Stevens, CF David Nowak, 3B Jay Yaconetti and RF Josh Green also drove in runs for Surprise (8-4), which remained in first place by a game over Yuma in the Arizona Division.
Surprise will try to make it two sweeps in a row Wednesday night when the Flyers and Falcons play the final game of their three-game series. Surprise swept Long Beach at home last weekend.
LHP Pete Hartman (1-0, 3.00) takes the hill for Surprise, opposing RHP Jeff Groeger (0-0, 0.00).
