Fresno Falcons News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls defeated the Fresno Falcons in Game Seven of the Taylor Cup Finals by a score of 3-1 on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena to become the final Championship winners in West Coast Hockey League history.
As they have in each of their home games throughout the Finals, the Gulls drew first blood. Working on the power play, Mark Pederson found captain Dennis Purdie back-door for his fifth of the playoffs at 8:18 of the first.
With the score still 1-0 early in the second period, San Diego yet again capitalized on the power play. Terry Friesen stopped a blast from the point by Trevor Sherban, but Pederson shoveled in the rebound uncontested and the Gulls took a 2-0 lead to the third.
Fresno pulled within one early in the third period off a power play goal from captain Jason Weaver at 2:57. Still within a goal for much of the frame, the Falcons could not crack San Diego's flawless defensive style in search of the equalizer. The Gulls' Cory Cyrenne added some insurance at 15:42 with his first goal of the series, and San Diego skated away with the Taylor Cup by a score of 3-1 and a four games to three series win.
The Falcons, Gulls and the rest of the WCHL will join the soon-to-be-renamed East Coast Hockey League this coming fall as Fresno will open play in the brand new Save Mart Center on the Fresno State campus.
