Fairbanks Isn't Wild About Anchorage

April 11, 2008 - Intense Football League (Intense)
Alaska Wild News Release

The intensity was in the air last night. Inter-state rivals Alaska Wild and Fairbanks Grizzlies clashed in a heated contest. The Grizzlies came into the Sullivan Arena with confidence, having a new coach and new quarterback this time around. All these additions for the Grizzlies didn't change the result. The Wild swept the Grizzlies at home with the 64-20 outcome last night. The AK Wild Defense kept the Fairbanks Offense in check, resulting in 6 interceptions (#2 Demarcus James and #3 Dawon Gentry led the way with 2 apiece) and a crushing safety by #99 Ma'o Tosi in the second quarter. AK Wild Defensive Coordinator Abe Hernandez added, "Our guys really wanted to pressure the new Fairbanks QB and cause a lot of turnovers." Bo Bartik, the new Grizzlies QB, threw 3 interceptions. Once he was replaced his back-up Damion Ward stayed on par with Bo, throwing 3 interceptions too.

Nick Mystrom, #9, was out with a leg injury. Keith Smith, #14, stepped in and stepped up against the Grizzlies. Smith gave a great show to the football fans in Anchorage at the Sullivan with a 7 touchdown pass performance. #8 Andre "Blazin" Velazquez led all receiving with 4 catches and 4 touchdowns and #7 Nian Taylor 4 catches and 1 touchdown. A familiar face to the Grizzlies, #12 Thomas "T" Ford had 2 receiving touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown for the Wild. "We missed having Nick in uniform tonight, but Keith added a dimension that really helped us win this game," said AK Wild Head Coach Hans Deemer.

Since #9 Nick Mystrom was out at QB, he was also out as kicker. Mack Pennington, #24, who was signed to the Wild squad 48 hours before the game, played as kicker. Pennington played at East High school and played at Ventura College (CA.). Pennington participated in the AK Wild kicker tryouts in late February. Pennington was a bit nervous, but had a good showing. He finished 6 for 8 on points after touchdowns.

The Wild has a five home game winning streak and a 3-2 record on the season. Fairbanks is 1-5 with the recent loss to the Wild.
