May 22, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

LA CROSSE (Wis.) ? For the second-straight week, the Extreme's game was decided by a last-second field goal, and for the second-straight week, they prevailed. Only this time, instead of Bloomington kicker Peter Christofilakos nailing a game-winner, it was La Crosse kicker Jared Keating missing a 30-yard field goal wide right as time expired as the Extreme won their third-straight game, 40-37 Friday night at the La Crosse Center.

Extreme quarterback Rocky Hinds had a solid game completing 22-38 for 209 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Wide receiver John Cooper caught nine passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Bernard Payton caught one touchdown, and ran another in.

Spartans quarterback Buddy Rivera was 18-27 for 209 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had three rushing touchdowns. His favorite target was Aaron Straiten who caught eight passes for 54 yards. Antonio Overstreet caught both touchdown passes.

The Extreme struck first early in the first quarter when Payton took it in from three-yards out as Bloomington took a 7-3 lead. The Spartans would respond in the second quarter as Rivera had a six-yard touchdown run of his own to tie the game at seven apiece. Christofilakos would break the tie just before the half with a 26-yard field goal as the Extreme went into the locker room with a 10-7 lead.

The Spartans took the lead on its first possession of the second half when Rivera found Overstreet for a 44-yard touchdown pass as La Crosse took a 14-10 advantage. Both teams would battle back and forth. Trailing 23-20 early in the fourth quarter, Extreme linebacker Justin Harrison recovered a fumble and took it 18-yards to the house to help Bloomington regain the lead, 27-23.

Spartan wide receiver Chris Head caught a 31-yard touchdown with 1:15 left in the game to take a 37-33 lead, but the Extreme would respond as Payton took it in from four-yards out with 46 seconds remaining in the game to solidify the 40-37 victory.

The Extreme will have a by-week next week before returning to action for their final regular-season home game Saturday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum when they will play host to the Western Michigan Thunder Hawks.
