February 19, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
When the Defenders learned that Extreme Makeover Home Edition was coming to Southeastern Connecticut their immediate reaction was "what can we do to help?" When they realized the chosen family was same Girard Family of Voluntown, CT, they helped raise money for at the end of the 2008 season, it was an added bonus.
The 2009 season will mark the 15th season of Minor League Baseball at Dodd Stadium, and to help start the season with a bang, the Defenders have declared their Opening Day on April 16th-Extreme Project 615 Volunteer Appreciation Night presented by the Norwich Bulletin! The Defenders will be donating 100% of ticket revenue specifically generated from this project 615 to the Girard Family.
"With the support of the community, a capacity of over 6,500 seats and tickets priced at $8, we as a community can help raise some major funds that will drastically benefit the Girard Family for years to come," said Defenders General Manager Charlie Dowd.
Along with the ticket sales donation, the Defenders will be recognizing the numerous volunteers throughout the night, including pre-game festivities, an in-game check presentation to the Girard Family, and a post-game tennis ball toss to raise some extra monies. Volunteers are encouraged to wear their blue volunteer shirts from the project, as photos will be a big part of the night. More details will follow!
"When we caught word of what the Defenders were doing to help support the Girard Family, we wanted to jump aboard and do our part to make sure a gesture of this magnitude reaches its highest potential," said Norwich Bulletin's Promotions Coordinator Donna Antonacci.
