BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Chris Hummel has enjoyed his share of experiences during a football career that has spanned from his high school days, through college and into the professional ranks last season as a member of the Bloomington Extreme indoor team.

But it's not just playing the game that Hummel finds enjoyment in as an Extreme player.

It's the opportunity to meet and mingle with fans of all ages and all walks of life, much like he experienced recently when he and rookie Janiah Downing participated in the Pantagraph's first-ever Kids Expo at the Bloomington Interstate Center.

"The chance to meet people and get to know them makes the experience as a player more unique," said Hummel, the team's starting defensive tackle last season and a strong ambassador for the team.

"It's fun to see how the young kids react to us as players. They ask a lot of good questions and have a good understanding of the game. The look in their eyes is cool when you shake their hands. You can tell they look up to us as players and role models."

The six-hour Kids' Expo attracted about 5,000 adults and children, who enjoyed various displays and activities geared toward children.

"The event went better than we expected," said Terri Haerr, the community services coordinator for the Pantagraph. "We were expecting about 3,000 people. It was thrilling to see how excited the kids were when they got the opportunity to meet the football and hockey players.

"The football and (Bloomington PrairieThunder) hockey booths were two of the more popular booths."

Hummel believes events such as the Kids Expo are an excellent way to give back to the community.

"They support us as fans when they come to our games, so we are more than happy to help with community events," said Hummel.
