
Explosion QB Aaron Smetanka Named 2014 CIFL Offensive MVP

(Erie, Pa)- Erie Explosion quarterback Aaron Smetanka has been named the 2014 CIFL Offensive MVP. The award was announced at halftime of the CIFL Championship game following a vote of the CIFL owners and head coaches. Smetanka who just finished his second professional season with Erie, has led the Explosion to consecutive league titles and has a (21-2) record as a starter over the past two seasons. Smetanka led the Explosion to the CIFL's number one ranked offensive unit for two consecutive seasons, and has led Erie in total offense in each of the last two seasons. During the 2014 CIFL regular season Smetanka passed for 27 touchdowns with only one interception during the entire season. Smetanka passed for 6 touchdowns with no interceptions in the playoffs as Erie defeated the Saginaw Sting and Marion Blue Racers on the road to capture the 2014 CIFL Title. Smetanka becomes the third different quarterback to earn league MVP honors under the guidance of Erie Head Coach Shawn Liotta.

Aaron has guided our offense to the top rankings in the league each season, and his development from the beginning of his rookie season has been staggering. He is extremely accurate, smart, and efficient in our passing game. He can make all of the throws in the indoor game and is a very powerful runner. No one works harder than Aaron and his poise, toughness, and leadership qualities have helped us bring two championships to the City of Erie. He showed tremendous poise in leading our team back from second half deficits on numerous occasions including the past two championship games. Aaron is a first-class individual with high character, and it truly has been a pleasure to have coached him the past two seasons," commented Erie Explosion Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
Aaron Smetanka is a graduate of Saint Vincent College where he was named First Team All-Conference PAC-Team following his junior and senior seasons. Smetanka is the All-time leading passer for the Bearcats finishing with 3.896 yards in only two seasons. He finished his senior campaign with First Team All-Conference accolades after completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns. Following his record setting career, Smetanka was chosen to participate in the Aztec Bowl All-Star Game in Puebla, Mexico; Smetanka spent his freshman and sophomore seasons with Division I-FCS Robert Morris University. Smetanka, a product of Pittsburgh's North Catholic High School was the 2007 Post-Gazette North Athlete of the Year. Smetanka is currently the quarterbacks coach at Saint Vincent College.
The Erie Explosion are the 2014 CIFL Champions, earning back to back titles after going undefeated during the 2013 season. The Erie Explosion have won 80% of their games (40-10) since the 2011 season and have won two division and two league titles during that time. Over the past two seasons in the CIFL; Erie has finished with the leagues top ranked offense and defensive unit, had two league MVP's, and finished with a 22-2 record with two league championships.
