Portland Forest Dragons News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - The Kansas City Royals called up former Sioux City RHP Nate Field on Wednesday from Triple-A Omaha (Neb.) of the Pacific Coast League.
Field had two saves in two appearances for Omaha in 2 1-3 scoreless innings this season. He spent 2001 as the closer at Double-A Wichita (Kan.) and accumulated 19 saves in 73 innings. He walked 18, struck out 67 and posted a 1.48 earned run average.
The Royals purchased Field's contract from Sioux City on June 29, 2000, and assigned him to Charleston (W.Va.) of the South Atlantic League. In 36 1-3 innings he had a 1-2 record and 2.23 ERA in Charleston.
Field, 26, pitched two seasons in the Montreal organization after the Expos signed him as a non-drafted free agent out of Fort Hays State University in Kansas. The Expos released him on March 29, 2000, and the St. Paul Saints signed him. The Saints traded him to Sioux City before the season, and he compiled a 3-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in 23 1-3 innings for the Explorers that year before his contract was sold to Kansas City.
Field was born in Denver, Colo., and now resides in Littleton. He stands 6- foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds.
Field is the second Northern Leaguer to make his major league debut in 2002. Former Duluth-Superior and Sioux Falls RHP Terry Pearson made the Detroit 25-man roster out of spring training. Pearson has pitched 5 2-3 innings and given up seven runs with no record in three games.
Seven additional former Northern League players are on big league rosters now: OF J.D. Drew (St. Louis), OF Kevin Millar (Florida), SS Rey Ordonez (New York Mets), LHP Eddie Oropesa (Arizona), LHP Mike Porzio (Chicago White Sox), LHP Scott Stewart (Montreal) and RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Texas disabled list).
Considered the pre-eminent independent league in the United States and Canada, the 18-team Northern League has moved more than 400 players to major league organizations since its inception in 1993. Twenty-five of those players have eventually reached the major leagues.
