(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today announced the hiring of veteran CFL special teams and defensive back coach Noel Thorpe.

Thorpe spent the past six seasons with Montreal and under his direction the Alouettes' special teams and defensive units were consistently among the league's best. Regarded as an outstanding teacher, Thorpe tutored four of the past six East Division Most Outstanding Rookies - Etienne Boulay (2006), Mathieu Proulx ('05), Almondo Curry ('04), Keith Stokes ('02). Montreal punter Damon Duval was named to the 2007 CFL All-Star team.

Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says " Noel has developed into one of the CFL's top special teams and defensive secondary coaches. The Alouettes played in four of the last six Grey Cups and Noel played an important role in their success. After coaching against him for several years, we're excited to have Noel on our side now".

A native of Vancouver, Thorpe played college football at St. Cloud University in Minnesota and later transferred to the University of British Columbia. He broke into the coaching ranks with UBC in 1996 and helped the T-Birds to their Vanier Cup title in 1997. Thorpe is married to former Olympic volleyball player and CBC Sports analyst Erminia Russo. They have two children, Emma and Peyton.
