Erie BayHawks News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, March 8, 2011 - The Erie BayHawks dazzled the School Kids Jam home crowd of 5,203 as they downed the Springfield Armor 101-92 on Tuesday.

The BayHawks jumped out to a quick start after the 11 am tip-off and lead by as many as 32 points in the third quarter before Springfield stormed back in the fourth to make things interesting.

Ivan Johnson answered the bell early as he dropped in 10 first quarter points to put Erie up by 14 at the end of the frame. Erie's lead grew to 19 points at the half thanks to a stingy defense that gave up only 28 first-half points to the Armor.

Erie picked up right where they left off in the third quarter as they outscored Springfield 25-16 in the period to take a 72-44 lead in to the final frame.

But Gavin Edwards and Lance Hurdle led a fierce Springfield attack, each notching 13 points in the fourth quarter, to bring the visitors all the way back to within nine points in the game's final minute. But the surge would prove to be too little too late as Erie was able to hang on and secure the victory.

Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, Tasmin Mitchell added 20 and Jermaine Beal notched 19. Kyle Spain had Erie's only double-double scoring 10 and grabbing 10 boards. Erik Daniels, in his first game since returning to the team, added 10 points and 5 rebounds in just over 15 minutes of play.

Springfield was led by Edwards' 22, Hurdle and Scottie Reynolds each had 18, and Eugene Spates chipped in 10. Former BayHawks forward Jarvis Gunter had 9 points in 20 minutes in his first return to Erie after being waived earlier this season.

Erie finishes their six-game homestand on Thursday when they host Maine at 7pm. Thursday's game is a Buck Night, featuring Smith's hot dogs, popcorn soda and beer all just one dollar all game.
