Erie Explosion News Release
(Erie, PA) - The Erie Explosion have announced the signing of LB Roosevelt Benjamin to a contract for the 2011 season. Benjamin (6'2"-255), a native of Erie, PA, has spent the last decade as one of the most dominant defensive performers in professional indoor football. He is well-known to indoor football fans throughout the country as a perennial All-League performer, and an intimidating physical presence with an outstanding knowledge of the game. Benjamin has been selected as an All-League performer for the past six consecutive seasons at his linebacker position.
Benjamin finished the 2010 season as an All-League performer for the Erie Storm despite only playing in 8 games. Benjamin came to prominence as one of the leaders of the defensive unit of the Erie Freeze from 2005 to 2006. Early in the 2007 season, he was traded to Canton, and finished as an All-League Performer for the Legends. Benjamin was the leader of the Erie RiverRats defensive unit that finished among the league leaders in the AIFA in 2008 and earned a 10-4 regular season record. The 2008 Erie RiverRats defense finished among the top three in the league in defensive touchdowns scored, fumbles recovered, sacks, and opponent third-down conversions. In 2009 he garnered All- League honors for the Carolina Speed before reuniting with Coach Liotta for the 2010 season as a member of the Erie Storm. Benjamin played collegiately from 1997-2000 at Clarion University in the PSAC after a stellar high school career at Erie's Central High School.
"I couldn't be happier that Roosevelt is going to continue his career with us in 2011. He is one of the top players at his position in the history of the indoor game, functions as an on-field coach to our defensive unit, and is an excellent ambassador of professional football in the Erie community. The value of having Roosevelt as a leader, teacher, and mentor of our young defensive players will be invaluable to our success in 2011", commented Erie Explosion Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
