Erie Explosion News Release
(Port Huron, MI)- The Erie Explosion traveled to Michigan and turned in a dominating performance in all phases of the game as they handed the host Patriots a 65-30 defeat. The Explosion who improved their record to (5-2) on the season built a 58-18 lead midway through the fourth quarter before two late Port Huron touchdowns narrowed the final margin. The Erie offense put together a very efficient display as they scored on their first 6 possessions of the game and were only stopped twice as they racked up 257 total yards. Quarterback Aaron Smetanka was 21-24 for 200 yards and 6 touchdown passes. Wide Receiver Travis Tarpley a product of Delaware State who is in his first professional season had a breakout game with 8 receptions for 103 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Erie offensive line did not surrender a sack and allowed running back Richard Stokes to add 27 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.
The Erie defense limited Port Huron to 175 yards of total offense on 52 plays. Port Huron quarterback James Stallons was 20-35 for 173 yards but was intercepted 4 times by the Explosion defense. DeQwan Young had 2 interceptions including one that he returned for a 30 yard touchdown in the second quarter. David Castillo added an interception in the enzone to stop a Port Huron scoring drive, and linebacker Jon D'Angleo added an interception for the Explosion. The Explosion defensive line of Bob Hammer, Zach Williams, Tim Green, and DaJuan Smith got consistent pressure on the quarterback and effectively shut down the Port Huron running game. The Erie defensive line and linebackers Jon D'Angelo and Stephen Johnson limited the Patriot rushing attack to 2 total yards on 16 carries.
"I was very pleased with our execution in all three phases of the game. Defensively we forced turnovers and effectively took away their running game. Offensively we were unstoppable most of the game and finished drives. Port Huron was committed to stopping our running game and I was very pleased with the efficiency and quick strike ability we had in our passing game. I thought our tempo offensively wore them down as the game went on and allowed us to put the game out of reach in the second quarter," commented Erie Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
The Erie Explosion will hit the road for the final road game of the regular season to face the Detroit Thunder (0-5) on Sunday March 30th. The game is scheduled for a 4:00pm kickoff at the Melvindale Civic Center in Melvindale, Michigan. Fans can listen to the game live on the Mid State Sports Network at midstatesports.net.
