Erie Edges Idaho at 2012 NBA D-League Showcase

RENO, NEV., Jan. 9, 2012 - Mike James was always known in the trade as a "scoring point." In 2005-06 with the Toronto Raptors, James averaged a career-best 20.3 points in 79 games.

In just his second game with the Erie BayHawks, James, despite being the only player on the floor without his last name stitched into his jersey, lived up to his billing, scoring 23 points as the BayHawks defeated the Idaho Stampede, 103-101 in the opening game of the 2012 NBA Development League Showcase.

James, who last played in the NBA during the 2009-10 season, averaged 10.5 points in 528 games over nine-plus years. He wasn't shy, finishing 10-for-20 from the field, to go with five rebounds and five assists.

Chris Daniels had a strong game for Erie, scoring 19 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. A training camp invite of the Los Angeles Lakers, the 6-11 Daniels flashed the shooting range that has kept him on the NBA's radar.

Armon Johnson led the Stampede (7-10) with 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting. On assignment from the Portland Trail Blazers, Johnson, who played his college ball at Nevada-Reno, missed a driving layup at the buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime.

Fellow Portland assignee Luke Babbitt, who played with Johnson at Nevada-Reno, added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Stampede. Stuck in a numbers game on a very deep Trail Blazers squad, and with little time for practice due a condensed season, Johnson and Babbitt are getting valuable playing experience in the NBA D-League.

Erie (8-10) returns to action tomorrow against Austin. Idaho takes the court again Wednesday against Bakersfield.
