May 10, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 10, 2006) - A strong pitching effort by starter Ryan Jensen and a stellar night at the plate by Elvis Pena lifted the Ducks to a 5-1 victory over the Atlantic City Surf on Wednesday evening at Citibank Park. The Ducks win combined with Bridgeport's loss in Lancaster vaulted Long Island into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic League North Division.
Long Island scored a single run in each of the third, fifth and sixth frames, before rallying for a pair in the home half of the eight. The Surf were able to get on the board in the eighth, but had their comeback hopes snuffed out by the reliable pitching duo of Mike Crudale and Todd Erdos.
Pena led the Ducks offense with a 3-for-4 evening, highlighted by his first home run since the 2004 season. Kevin Haverbusch and Tony Schrager each added a pair of hits in Long Island's 10-hit evening.
Ryan Jensen (1-1) picked up the win after holding Atlantic City to one run on five hits over 7.1 innings. Kevin Dougherty (0-2) absorbed the loss after allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in 5.2 innings of work. Mike Crudale came on in relief and retired the two batters he faced in the eighth. Erdos tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to wrap up the contest.
The Ducks and Surf will wrap up their series on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Citibank Park. Pat Ahearne (1-0) will take the hill for the Flock against Atlantic City's Mark Persails (1-0). Tickets for this and all Ducks home games can be purchased by stopping by the Citibank Park Box Office in person (M-F, 10-6; Saturdays 10-2), visiting www.liducks.com or by calling 631-940-TIXX today.
