Elmira Pioneers Add Four from Siena for 2015

February 17, 2015 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) - Elmira Pioneers News Release

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Pioneers are proud to announce the addition of 4 players from Siena College. The Saints are coached by Tony Rossi who is in his 46th season calling the shots. Rossi is the second longest tenured head coach in Division I baseball behind only Augie Garrido of Texas. Last season Taylor Ahearn suited up for the Pioneers both as a pitcher and outfielder finishing with a 2-3 record through 8 starts and a 3.30 ERA.

"We are excited to host 4 players from Tony Rossi's 2015 Siena Saints club. Coach Rossi runs a solid program that has been to numerous NCAA tournaments and our relationship with Siena is a good one." Stated Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch.

The first Saint that will call Dunn Field home this summer is sophomore catcher Dan Vasquez. Vasquez hails from Pembroke Pines, FL where he attended West Broward High School. Vasquez will look to get acclimated to the Division I game after an injury riddled season a year ago. "We look forward to Dan's abilities as an upper classman behind the plate. Dan was a player that was supposed to come to Elmira last season, but injury prevented that." Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch on Vasquez.

Brewerton, NY native Kyano Cummings is entering his junior season at Siena. The 6'1" left handed pitcher is coming off a 2014 season in which he made 24 relief appearances for the Saints going 2-1 with 32 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. His 24 appearances last season were 5th most in Siena history. "The Pioneers are fortunate to add LHP Kyano Cummings who as Coach Rossi tells us is a "smart" pitcher. It is always important to have leadership on a pitching staff and with Kyano's stuff from the left side; we know that the younger pitchers will follow his lead." Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch's thoughts on Cummings.

Rounding out the quartet is Rutland, VT native Ryan Bellomo and Wappingers Falls, NY native Jordan Bishop. Bellomo, a right handed pitcher is coming off of an outstanding fall ball season. Bellomo garnered First Team All-State and All-Conference honors in his sophomore through senior season. Bishop, a 6'1" middle infielder is looking to compete for a starting spot in the Saints lineup. He was named the Dutchess County Player of the Year in his senior season.

"Ryan Bellomo brings plus stuff. Rossi really likes this kid as he features an aggressive fastball with an above average breaking pitch. Jordan (Bishop) was actually the first player recommended by the Siena staff, as they expect him to be a significant contributor this season. Here in Elmira we are counting on Jordan to play multiple positions and to provide some excitement out of the left handed batter's box." Stated Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch on the freshman duo.

The Pioneers are excited to get the 2015 season underway! The Pioneers have a lot of fun and exciting promotions planned for this summer at historic Dunn Field. Join in on all of the exciting action by purchasing season tickets! Opening weekend at Historic Dunn Field is slated for Friday, June 5th against the Adirondack Trail Blazers and Saturday, June 6th against the Newark Pilots; first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. There will be a huge post game fireworks display to follow the game both nights.
